Transportation around campus on time is crucial for in-person college students looking to succeed in their studies. Unfortunately, inequities have arisen between the ability of able-bodied students to get to and from class and permanently or temporarily disabled students looking to do the same. ASU’s solution to this problem, the Disability Access and Resource Transportation (DART) service, does adequately address the needs of its targeted customers properly. Unfortunately, student surveys and anecdotal evidence from students’ lived experiences have demonstrated that DART often leaves students waiting for more than half an hour for a ride, causes students to miss class, and is altogether unreliable in today’s age where punctuality is key to success. Our goal in our thesis project was to create an equal on-campus transportation playing field for students with and without mobility issues so that a students’ ability to get around campus would never serve as a hindrance to his/her ability to, at a minimum, earn a degree; ideally empowering all students to thrive regardless of their personal circumstances.

Valleyponics: Hydroponic Horticulture Minimizing Land, Water, and Pesticides

In arid environments such as Arizona, agricultural producers are burdened by constraints placed on them by inhospitable weather and limited access to water and fertile soil when attempting to grow produce. Farms in the arid Southwest often have to build greenhouses to overcome such constraints; however, such greenhouses may be relatively space, water, and pesticide intensive and often have demanding maintenance needs and overhead costs. In addition, many current agricultural practices exhaust land resources disparagingly, leading to irreversible environmental degradation. In an effort to improve agricultural production for those limited by weather and resource constraints while simultaneously increasing sustainability in land, resource and pesticide use, we have created Valleyponics, a hydroponic growth services company centered around creating a minimal farming footprint. The company uses a consultative services approach, leveraging NASA Veggie Growth System Technology to provide solutions to large businesses by automating their agricultural production processes and minimizing resource use year-round. Valleyponics aims to cultivate consultative partnerships which will allow our clients, their communities, and the environment to flourish.

Partisanship and Ethics: The Relationship Between Measures of Partisan Contestation and State Legislative Ethics Structures

This project focuses on the effects of partisanship and electoral contestation on the likelihood of state legislators to adopt an independent ethics commission. Existing literature suggests that ethics reform is a function of public perception and the need to assuage public outrage in the face of scandal. Additionally, many legislators view ethics laws as suggestions of their own ineptitude and thus resist reform. However, this existing view fails to consider the unique nature of the enabling legislation of ethics commissions and often conflates external, public drivers of reform with internal drivers personal to the individual legislators. Using logistic regression and time series analysis, this project finds that increased durations of single-party control in state legislatures decreases the chances of that legislature having an independent commission, suggesting that legislators use the partisan ethics committees as political weapons when they are in power. When the dominant party does not face the risk of becoming the minority, there is little in place to motivate ethics reform, thus the lack of commissions. This research identifies the need to develop more focused measures of inter-legislator partisanship and suggests that the effects of different types of ethics laws, specifically those pertaining to ethics commissions, should more often be studied in isolation, rather than as one single category.

Identifying Areas of Bias in National Football League Pro Bowl Fan Voting

The National Football League’s Pro Bowl game features the league’s best players voted on by coaches, players, and fans. Being selected to a Pro Bowl is significant to a player, as it comes with contract incentives, endorsement opportunities, and accolades that are critical for Hall of Fame consideration. However, due to the emerging media presence, different fans consume different media, resulting in very different perceptions and opinions of players around the league. Because of this, certain players who are deserving of Pro Bowl votes are not receiving them from fans because of the fans’ bias towards other teams or players, unawareness of the player’s on-field performance, or other factors heavily influenced by their fandom and the media surrounding them. The purpose of this study was to determine where bias exists amongst different groups of fans and where bias exists amongst the different ways of presenting player statistics and information to fans to ultimately suggest ways to present player statistics and information within the Pro Bowl voting process to mitigate the biases found. Results show that bias does exist between multiple groups of fans and the presentation of statistics and information shown to them, and suggestions to mitigate bias revolve around redesigning the presentation of statistics and information presented to fans within the Pro Bowl voting process.

In the basketball world, perhaps one of the most sought-after feelings is that of momentum. Basketball players, coaches, analysts, and fans alike are all too familiar with the idea that a “team has momentum” during a stretch of time, or that the team needs to do something to “generate their own momentum”. In a game that appears to be an accumulation of independent possessions, what exactly does momentum really mean? My goal was to see if there is a way to quantify momentum in an NBA game, particularly by looking at the Phoenix Suns 2021-2022 NBA season.

This project analyzes aspects of ESports and gaming in relation to college/university students and college/university campuses. The specific focus of the project was establishing that there was an interest in additional Esports and gaming engagement on campus and then determining what manner of engagement was most desired by students. In order to discover the most popular form of Esports and gaming engagement for students, we held two events: a recreational ESports Competition and tutorials to teach students how to mod video games. After carrying out these events we established that an Esports Competition was a more popular form of engagement. However, we also established that both forms of engagement would be successful with proper marketing and execution.

Over the past few years, legislation legalizing sports betting in many states has been voted into effect. In the spring of 2021, Arizona legislators approved a bill that would legalize sports betting for anyone over the age of 21 in Arizona, and with Governor Doug Ducey signing the bill into law, September 9, 2021, marked the first day of legal sports betting in Arizona. Due to this new major avenue of business, sports betting became a very popular topic in both the news and social media, creating a buzz for new users in Arizona. This study will focus on the sports betting industry and the major companies involved in creating sports betting infrastructure in Arizona. Data will be collected and analyzed from multiple sources including company financial statements, news articles, and independent research focusing on the financial impact of Arizona sports bettors on the sports betting industry’s market profitability. It is expected that there will be a correlation between money gambled in Arizona and a rapid increase in profitability for sports betting companies. This study will provide an overview of the economic impact that sports betting had in Arizona in 2021, and look towards the future of betting in years to come.
