The excellent traditional Chinese culture is an important source of modern socialist culture with Chinese characteristics and an inexhaustible spiritual driving force for the Chinese nation. As our country’s comprehensive national strength unceasingly climbs, the Chinese traditional culture receives increasing attention from people of all walks of life. The cultivation of rice in the south and wheat in the north in China leads to a huge cultural difference, which shapes individual behavior by influencing individual values, and subsequently influences enterprise governance mode and management decisions. Using the data of the origins of the founders of family businesses listed on A-share market from 2008 to 2020, this paper examines the relationship between collectivist culture and family business innovation and its impact mechanism. The results show that collectivist culture inhibits the innovation input of family firms, and the level of family control plays a mediating role. When the market regulatory environment is better and the political association of enterprises is lower, the influence of collectivist culture on innovation is more obvious. This DBA dissertation thoroughly analyzes the specific path that affects the innovative ability of family businesses. It enriches the related research on family business governance and technological innovation, contributes to the empirical evidence of eastern cultural context, and provides reference for strengthening the dominant position of technological innovation in family business and improving the level of regional innovation.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have emerged as a vital force in the economic development of our country, significantly influencing national economic growth, employment rates, market competition, and innovation. Consequently, the ability of SMEs to achieve stable performance growth is crucial for socio-economic development. Previous research has identified factors such as political connections, cash flow, capital, and information technology as significant contributors to business growth. However, SMEs often lack these resources or cannot control them, making existing research inadequate for guiding the performance growth of SMEs.To address this issue, this study is grounded in the resource-based view and constructs a theoretical model on the impact of SME strategic completeness on performance growth. This model is based on literature research and in-depth interviews. It highlights the mediating roles of market adaptability, operational agility, and employee proactivity. Additionally, the model examines the moderating effects of competitive intensity, strategic implementation capability, and management digitalization. The study collected 203 valid SME samples for analysis and hypothesis testing, yielding the following conclusions: (1)The more comprehensive the business strategy, the better the adaptability to external markets, the higher the operational agility, and the stronger the initiative of employees. (2)Better market adaptability leads to faster performance growth. (3)Higher operational agility accelerates performance growth. (4)Greater employee initiative enhances performance growth. (5)The stronger the external competitive intensity faced by a business, the more effective a well-developed strategy is in improving market adaptability, operational agility, and employee initiative. (6)Stronger strategic implementation capabilities further enhance the effectiveness of a well-developed strategy in improving market adaptability and employee initiative. (7)A higher level of management digitalization enhances the effects of market adaptability, operational agility, and employee initiative, thereby boosting business performance. This study offers theoretical and practical value by clarifying the paths, mechanisms, and boundary conditions through which strategic completeness promotes business performance growth, enriching the theoretical system of SME performance growth. Furthermore, by integrating the cutting-edge concept of management digitalization into the research on strategic completeness and performance growth, this study contributes to the development and refinement of the research framework. Practically, it provides strategic recommendations for SMEs on how to enhance business performance growth through strategic completeness.

Applying the theory of dynamic capabilities, this research explores the procedures and the outcomes of adaptations in disaster relief nonprofit organizations. Using the in-depth interviews and survey data from the managers of disaster relief nonprofit organizations in Arizona, Florida, and New Jersey, this research answers three key questions: 1) How do disaster relief nonprofit organizations apply their dynamic capabilities to make adaptations? 2) What are the impacts of dynamic capabilities, including sensing, learning, integrating, and coordinating capabilities, on the performance of disaster relief nonprofit organizations in service provision, public policy engagement, and community social capital cultivation? 3) Taking the network of Voluntary/Community Organizations Active in Disasters (VOAD/COAD) as an example, can the dynamic capabilities of disaster relief nonprofit organizations explain the variation of network engagement and the gained benefits from the network among the VOAD/COAD members? The results show that the procedures of adaptation in disaster relief nonprofit organizations are associated with a rhizomic rather than a linear approach, which is implied by the theory of dynamic capabilities. Strategic connectivity, temporal simultaneity, and directional flexibility are the three critical features of the rhizome model. Additionally, dynamic capabilities significantly influence organizational performance in service provision, public policy engagement, and social capital cultivation, although sensing, learning, integrating, and coordinating capabilities shape performance differently. Moreover, network engagement, as an uncommon practice for disaster relief nonprofit organizations, is also impacted by the dynamic capabilities of disaster relief nonprofit organizations. The result shows that dynamic capabilities, especially learning capability, can promote the acquired benefits of disaster relief nonprofit organizations by bringing them more support in volunteer management and financial opportunities. The findings not only advance the current discussion about nonprofit engagement in disaster management but also add knowledge on dynamic capabilities in the third sector. The exploration of adaptations in disaster relief nonprofit organizations and the operation of the VOAD/COAD network provides valuable implications to both nonprofit managers and government officials.

Despite these challenges, what makes these communities unique is their ability to be resilient, considering their small population.

Rural communities experience various challenges, including having higher education options, regulating the workforce, access to capital and goods, and infrastructure development. Despite these challenges, what makes these communities unique is their ability to be resilient, considering their small population. A prime example of this is Gila County, located in eastern Arizona. This area includes a cluster of rural towns that have survived for a long time, 142 years! Amidst the rise and fall of the copper rush from the 1880s to the 1950s, as well as the development of U.S. 60 that bypassed multiple towns, Gila County prevailed. The health of this community is deeply connected to the current nonprofit sector. This county is home to a few churches, one private nonprofit school, a variety of public charities, a community hospital, and several volunteer organizations. In order to understand how Gila County nonprofits have been so successful, this study uses the Supply and Demand Theory to answer the central idea: how do leaders build resilient nonprofits? Using in-depth interviews and demographic data collection, this study reports on the views of rural nonprofit leaders with years of expertise. It answers four key questions: 1) How strongly do nonprofit leaders equate being resilient to the longevity of their organization? 2) How is funding currently used in rural nonprofits’ program development? 3) How is collaboration between community members and rural nonprofits necessary for success? 4) How does the organization currently use technology to further its mission? Through the lens of the Supply and Demand Theory, this study pinpoints how rural nonprofit leaders have utilized their resources to create an equilibrium between supply and demand. The results show that successful nonprofits showcase resilient practices through their current leadership. These findings expand upon current research on succession planning, funding resiliency, internal and external collaboration, and overall use of technology. By expanding on this knowledge, valuable information has been documented for both active and upcoming nonprofit leaders. Capturing the first-hand expertise of successful leaders in rural Arizona provides advice, inspiration, and hope for those to come.

This study examines the roles and impacts of U.S. foundation grantmaking for women, as well as the influences of the foundations’ institutional characteristics on their grantmaking practices by employing a mixed-methods research design. In the first quantitative phase, this study explores three major research questions: (1) How has foundation grantmaking for women changed in the U.S.? (2) Whether and how foundations’ institutional characteristics are related to their grantmaking activities for women? (3) Whether and how foundation grantmaking for women has influenced women’s status? To address these research questions, I collect and analyze data on the U.S. foundation grants for women during the period between 2005 and 2014 from the Foundation Center and data indicating women’s status at the state level from various sources. The second qualitative phase focuses on examining the second and third research questions further by employing a comparative case study approach. Specifically, I conducted semi-structured interviews with directors or staff of the selected five foundations supporting women’s causes. The results show that foundations supporting women’s causes have focused more on their advocacy role than their charitable role by distributing their grants to programs for women’s rights/studies. Additionally, a foundation is more likely to give grants for women’s rights/studies when the organization is younger, with a higher total giving size, in the Western region, in the state of liberal ideology, or an independent foundation. Furthermore, a state with a larger amount of foundation grants for women (per woman) reveals a higher women’s status. The case study findings indicate that differences exist in how foundations implement their grantmaking decisions for women and how foundations assess their grantmaking impact on women. It also shows some evidence that foundations’ grantmaking decisions and impact assessment strategies for women are affected by the foundations’ institutional characteristics such as women’s leadership. This dissertation sheds light on our understanding of current trends of U.S. foundation grantmaking for women that was less focused and makes both theoretical and practical contributions to the nonprofit sector by suggesting a framework to assess the impact of foundations in society.

The purpose of this study is to identify and examine how top revenue-generating nonprofits in Japan and the U.S. use Facebook, and to compare the differences. The two countries were selected due to the differing levels of government support for social welfare and related programs as the level of government support for social welfare tends to affect the size of a country’s nonprofit. To compare nonprofits in two countries, the International Classification of Nonprofit Organizations (ICNPO) was applied. U.S. nonprofits tend to offer more information on their Facebook profile compared to Japanese nonprofits. Additionally, 83% of nonprofits in the U.S. had a Facebook profile, while only 67% of Japanese nonprofits had a Facebook profile. As for engagement, this research shows that Japanese nonprofits tend to have better engagement compared to U.S. nonprofits. Additionally, with respect to post types, in the U.S. it is clear that for nonprofits in the Health category, posting images helps to promote engagement with users. However, in Japan, the same is true only for the Social Service category. While images tend to help increase engagement, posts with videos lower engagement for the U.S. cultural, health, philanthropic, and international nonprofits. However, in Japan, posting videos has a positive correlation with engagement for social service and environmental nonprofits. In addition, for Japanese nonprofits, posting an external link hurts engagement if the nonprofit is in either the Health or Philanthropic categories, which is the same for the U.S. However, posting an external link increases engagement for nonprofits in the Environmental category in Japan, but increases engagement for nonprofits in the Cultural category in the U.S. With respect to post content type, requesting donations through external links caused decreased comment based engagement for U.S. nonprofits. For Japanese nonprofits, including videos on posts requesting volunteers or donations increases comment based engagement. While some of these results are surprising, they indicate that different approaches are needed in different nonprofit categories and in different countries if nonprofits want to maximize user engagement.

turnover rates. Understanding why students chose to be involved in the first place is a major

Knowledge advancement occurs when the creation of new and useful knowledge encompasses and supersedes earlier knowledge. A rapidly growing number of scholars with state-of-the-art research tools has led to the growth of knowledge exploration in almost every field. It, however, has been observed that the findings of new studies frequently differ from previously established evidence and even disagree with one another. Conflicting and contradictory results prevail in the literature. This phenomenon has puzzled many people with respect to which findings are reliable and which should be considered as valid. Inconclusive results in the literature inhibit, rather than facilitate, knowledge advancement in sciences. Meta-analysis, which is referred to as the analysis of analyses, designed to synthesize findings from a large collection of quantitative analyses that produce inconsistent results has become a major research method in the fields of medicine, education, and psychology; however, the method has been slow to penetrate research in nonprofit and public management (NPM). This study, therefore, discusses how meta-analysis contributes to knowledge advancement in the fields of nonprofit and public management by using nonprofit commercialization as an example to examine its impact on nonprofit capacity and donations, respectively. The attention of this discussion is directed toward how the use of meta-regression models is able to offer new and useful knowledge that encompasses and supersedes earlier knowledge in the literature with evidence-based results. Moreover, this study examines whether the use of SEM-based meta-analysis produces equivalent results when compared with results from traditional meta-regression models. The comparison results suggest that the use of SEM-based meta-analysis is able to produce equivalent results even when missing data are present. Overall, this study makes at least two contributions. First, it introduces a newly-developed method for conducting meta-analysis to the field of NPM. This method is especially useful when there are missing data in data sets. Second and most importantly, this study demonstrates how knowledge advancement in NPM can be achieved by conducting meta-analysis.

The purpose of this study is to assess the factors that motivate and influence 18-24-year-olds, compared to those of other age groups, to volunteer, specifically in local hospitals. Volunteers play an integral role towards sustaining nonprofit organizations (NPOs). For this reason, volunteers have the potential to impact the success and effectiveness of local NPOs including nonprofit hospitals such as Banner Health, Mayo Clinic, and HonorHealth. These hospitals rely on the services provided by volunteers to help facilitate their patient care and achieve their missions. An important component of the hospitals’ volunteer programs must focus on the recruitment and retention of volunteers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, volunteer rates are lowest among 20-24-year-olds. Since most college students encompass the 18-24 age range, understanding the factors that motivate and influence them could indicate why there is a low number of hospital volunteers in this age group. ASU students were surveyed regarding their volunteer history, volunteer motivations, and volunteer constraints. Their responses were compared to survey results from local hospital volunteers to look for significant differences or similarities which are highlighted in this study. A total of 183 ASU students between the ages of 18 and 24 completed the survey, and 58 of those students identified as a prior or current hospital volunteer. Three ASU students participated in a focus group. Out of the five Arizona nonprofit hospitals contacted, only one participated in the study. Banner Thunderbird Medical Center (BTMC) had 34 active hospital volunteers complete the survey. The BTMC volunteers who participated in the study were between 14 and 83 years old with the most common age being 69 years old.

Project C.U.R.E. is a nonprofit organization that delivers donated medical supplies and services to developing nations across the world. Currently, the Phoenix location has three full time employees, so a majority of the manual work is completed by episodic and long-term volunteers as well as semesterly interns. Volunteers are the backbone of the organization's daily productivity. Productivity among the Project C.U.R.E. warehouses varies greatly by location and is not directly related to the size of the warehouse. Productivity if hereby defined as as a warehouse's capability to meet the organization's goal of one container per week. Productivity can be increased or decreased based on the number of volunteers, funding, and catalogued inventory. Across all warehouses there is generally an overflow of donated equipment and consumable products, and therefore this is not usually a factor in productivity. In order to better understand why the Phoenix warehouse is the second most productive despite being the smallest, we researched how the motivations of volunteers. A survey was conducted to assess the motives of Project C.U.R.E.'s volunteers by quantifying their responses according to the Volunteerism Functional Inventory (VFI). The survey also produced information regarding volunteer demographics (ie. including gender, age, and occupation), as well as statistics about how often they volunteer at Project C.U.R.E. and their overall satisfaction with the organization. The data was then analyzed to determine the most relevant VFI characteristic. Upon analyzing the data, it was observed that the majority of participants were male (58.95%) and were between the ages of 18 and 25 (82.11%). The results also showed that Project C.U.R.E. utilizes a large number of episodic volunteers from Arizona State University (due to its close proximity to the Phoenix warehouse) was supported in that the data showed 72.63% of participants were undergraduate students and that 48.42% had just volunteered for their first time. After combining survey questions that corresponded to the same characteristic of volunteerism as outlined by Clary et al. (values, social, career, understanding, protective, and enhancement) the average of the responses was taken and used to determine the most relevant motives for our volunteer population. Based on the data, values (average score of 5.0) and understanding (average score of 5.0) were the two most relevant characteristics and protective (average score of 1.0) was the least relevant to volunteers. Additionally, 41.1% of survey respondents reported food would incentivize them to return to Project C.U.R.E. Additionally, 35.6% of survey respondents reported receiving Project C.U.R.E. merchandise would incentivize them to return in the future. Moving forward, it is recommended that the Project CURE Phoenix location begin providing their volunteers with merchandise and other forms of recognition based on the number of hours they committed to the organization.
