Solar photovoltaic (PV) generation has seen significant growth in 2021, with an increase of around 22% and exceeding 1000 TWh. However, this has also led to reliability and durability issues, particularly potential induced degradation (PID), which can reduce module output by up to 30%. This study uses cell- and module-level analysis to investigate the impact of superstrate, encapsulant, and substrate on PID.The influence of different substrates and encapsulants is studied using one-cell modules, showing that substrates with poor water-blocking properties can worsen PID, and encapsulants with lower volumetric resistance can conduct easily under damp conditions, enabling PID mechanisms (results show maximum degradation of 9%). Applying an anti-soiling coating on the front glass (superstrate) reduces PID by nearly 53%. Typical superstrates have sodium which accelerates the PID process, and therefore, using such coatings can lessen the PID problem. At the module level, the study examines the influence of weakened interface adhesion strengths in traditional Glass-Backsheet (GB) and emerging Glass-Glass (GG) (primarily bifacial modules) constructions. The findings show nearly 64% more power degradation in GG modules than in GB. Moreover, the current methods for detecting PID use new modules, which can give inaccurate information instead of DH-stressed modules for PID testing, as done in this work. A comprehensive PID susceptibility analysis for multiple fresh bifacial constructions shows significant degradation from 20 to 50% in various constructions. The presence of glass as the substrate exacerbates the PID problem due to more ionic activity available from the two glass sides. Recovery experiments are also conducted to understand the extent of the PID issue. Overall, this study identifies, studies, and explains the impact of superstrate, substrate, and encapsulant on the underlying PID mechanisms. Various pre- and post-stress characterization tests, including light and dark current-voltage (I-V) tests, electroluminescence (EL) imaging, infrared (IR) imaging, and UV fluorescence (UVF) imaging, are used to evaluate the findings. This study is significant as it provides insights into the PID issues in solar PV systems, which can help improve their performance and reliability.

The inherent behavior of many real world applications tends to exhibit complex or chaotic patterns. A novel technique to reduce and analyze such complex systems is introduced in this work, and its applications to multiple perturbed systems are discussed comprehensively. In this work, a unified approach between the Floquet theory for time periodic systems and the Poincare theory of Normal Forms is proposed to analyze time varying systems. The proposed unified approach is initially verified for linear time periodic systems with the aid of an intuitive state augmentation and the method of Time Independent Normal Forms (TINF). This approach also resulted in the closed form expressions for the State Transition Matrix (STM) and Lyapunov-Floquet (L-F) transformation for linear time periodic systems. The application of theory towards stability analysis is further demonstrated with the system of Suction Stabilized Floating (SSF) platform. Additionally, multiple control strategies are discussed and implemented to drive an unstable time periodic system to a desired stable point or orbit efficiently and optimally. The computed L-F transformation is further utilized to analyze nonlinear and externally excited systems with deterministic and stochastic time periodic coefficients. The central theme of this work is to verify the extension of Floquet theory towards time varying systems with periodic coefficients comprising of incommensurate frequencies or quasi-periodic systems. As per Floquet theory, a Lyapunov-Perron (L-P) transformation converts a time-varying quasi-periodic system to a time-invariant form. A class of commutative quasi-periodic systems is introduced to demonstrate the proposed theory and its applications analytically. An extension of the proposed unified approach towards analyzing the linear quasi-periodic system is observed to provide good results, computationally less complex and widely applicable for strongly excited systems. The computed L-P transformation using the unified theory is applied to analyze both commutative and non-commutative linear quasi-periodic systems with nonlinear terms and external excitation terms. For highly nonlinear quasi-periodic systems, the implementation of multiple order reduction techniques and their performance comparisons are illustrated in this work. Finally, the robustness and stability analysis of nonlinearly perturbed and stochastically excited quasi-periodic systems are performed using Lyapunov's direct method and Infante's approach.

Today, the United States consumer vehicle market consists of about 276 million legally registered units, a prime candidate for service skulduggery (BTS, 2019). It raised some concerns when research conducted by the author revealed that about half of United States survey participants state they feel uneasy about approaching either a mechanic they know or one that was new to them. Additionally, when only 10% of participants from the same survey fully trust mechanics, this raises the question, why are so many drivers of consumer vehicles wary about bringing their cars in for service or repair? Furthermore, the author determined that trust within the automotive repair industry is a worldwide issue, and countries with scarce resources have additional struggles of their own. The success of repair centers in countries closer to the equator weighs heavily on the mechanic's knowledge and access to repair resources. The author found that this is partially due to the rapid acceleration of the car market without a proper backbone to the automotive repair industry. Ultimately, this resulted in repair shops with untrained mechanics who perform poor quality labor for an inflated rate (Izogo, 2015). The author focuses on this global industry through the example of the Maasai Automotive Education Center (MAEC), a proposed facility and school located in Talek, Kenya. MAEC is designed to bring automotive customer and repair resources to a rural community that needs it the most to save their land, culture, and people. The author uses various recently conducted global studies, news articles and videos, and personal research to determine the crucial steps and considerations the MAEC development team needs to ensure project sustainability and success. This study's conclusion lists 11 essential attributes recommended for the MAEC repair facility for ethical and high-quality operation.

The field of prostheses and rehabilitation devices has seen tremendous advancement since the ’90s. However, the control aspect of the said devices is lacking. The need for mathematical theories to improve the control strategies is apparent. This thesis attempts to bridge the gap by introducing some dynamic system analysis and control strategies.Firstly, the human gait dynamics are assumed to be periodic. Lyapunov Floquet theory and Invariant manifold theory are applied. A transformation is obtained onto a simple single degree of freedom oscillator system. The said system is transformed back into the original domain and compared to the original system. The results are discussed and critiqued. Then the technique is applied to the kinematic and kinetic data collected from healthy human subjects to verify the technique’s feasibility. The results show that the technique successfully reconstructed the kinematic and kinetic data. Human gait dynamics are not purely periodic, so a quasi-periodic approach is adopted. Techniques to reduce the order of a quasi-periodic system are studied. Lyapunov-Peron transformation (a surrogate of Lyapunov Floquet transformation for quasi-periodic systems) is studied. The transformed system is easier to control. The inverse of the said transformation is obtained to transform back to the original domain. The application of the techniques to different cases (including externally forced systems) is studied. The reduction of metabolic cost is presented as a viable goal for applying the previously studied control techniques. An experimental protocol is designed and executed to understand periodic assistive forces' effects on human walking gait. Different tether stiffnesses are used to determine the best stiffness for a given subject population. An estimation technique is introduced to obtain the metabolic cost using the center of mass's kinematic data. Lastly, it is concluded that the mathematical techniques can be utilized in a robotic tail-like rehabilitation device. Some possible future research ideas are provided to implement the techniques mentioned in this dissertation.

This dissertation explores the use of deterministic scheduling theory for the design and development of practical manufacturing scheduling strategies as alternatives to current scheduling methods, particularly those used to minimize completion times and increase system capacity utilization. The efficient scheduling of production systems can make the difference between a thriving and a failing enterprise, especially when expanding capacity is limited by the lead time or the high cost of acquiring additional manufacturing resources. A multi-objective optimization (MOO) resource constrained parallel machine scheduling model with setups, machine eligibility restrictions, release and due dates with user interaction is developed for the scheduling of complex manufacturing systems encountered in the semiconductor and plastic injection molding industries, among others. Two mathematical formulations using the time-indexed Integer Programming (IP) model and the Diversity Maximization Approach (DMA) were developed to solve resource constrained problems found in the semiconductor industry. A heuristic was developed to find fast feasible solutions to prime the IP models. The resulting models are applied in two different ways: constructing schedules for tactical decision making and constructing Pareto efficient schedules with user interaction for strategic decision making aiming to provide insight to decision makers on multiple competing objectives.
Optimal solutions were found by the time-indexed IP model for 45 out of 45 scenarios in less than one hour for all the problem instance combinations where setups were not considered. Optimal solutions were found for 18 out of 45 scenarios in less than one hour for several combinations of problem instances with 10 and 25 jobs for the hybrid (IP and heuristic) model considering setups. Regarding the DMA MOO scheduling model, the complete efficient frontier (9 points) was found for a small size problem instance in 8 minutes, and a partial efficient frontier (29 points) was found for a medium sized problem instance in 183 hrs.

In the current photovoltaic (PV) industry, the O&M (operations and maintenance) personnel in the field primarily utilize three approaches to identify the underperforming or defective modules in a string: i) EL (electroluminescence) imaging of all the modules in the string; ii) IR (infrared) thermal imaging of all the modules in the string; and, iii) current-voltage (I-V) curve tracing of all the modules in the string. In the first and second approaches, the EL images are used to detect the modules with broken cells, and the IR images are used to detect the modules with hotspot cells, respectively. These two methods may identify the modules with defective cells only semi-qualitatively, but not accurately and quantitatively. The third method, I-V curve tracing, is a quantitative method to identify the underperforming modules in a string, but it is an extremely time consuming, labor-intensive, and highly ambient conditions dependent method. Since the I-V curves of individual modules in a string are obtained by disconnecting them individually at different irradiance levels, module operating temperatures, angle of incidences (AOI) and air-masses/spectra, all these measured curves are required to be translated to a single reporting condition (SRC) of a single irradiance, single temperature, single AOI and single spectrum. These translations are not only time consuming but are also prone to inaccuracy due to inherent issues in the translation models. Therefore, the current challenges in using the traditional I-V tracers are related to: i) obtaining I-V curves simultaneously of all the modules and substrings in a string at a single irradiance, operating temperature, irradiance spectrum and angle of incidence due to changing weather parameters and sun positions during the measurements, ii) safety of field personnel when disconnecting and reconnecting of cables in high voltage systems (especially field aged connectors), and iii) enormous time and hardship for the test personnel in harsh outdoor climatic conditions. In this thesis work, a non-contact I-V (NCIV) curve tracing tool has been integrated and implemented to address the above mentioned three challenges of the traditional I-V tracers.

This work compares I-V curves obtained using a traditional I-V curve tracer with the I-V curves obtained using a NCIV curve tracer for the string, substring and individual modules of crystalline silicon (c-Si) and cadmium telluride (CdTe) technologies. The NCIV curve tracer equipment used in this study was integrated using three commercially available components: non-contact voltmeters (NCV) with voltage probes to measure the voltages of substrings/modules in a string, a hall sensor to measure the string current and a DAS (data acquisition system) for simultaneous collection of the voltage data obtained from the NCVs and the current data obtained from the hall sensor. This study demonstrates the concept and accuracy of the NCIV curve tracer by comparing the I-V curves obtained using a traditional capacitor-based tracer and the NCIV curve tracer in a three-module string of c-Si modules and of CdTe modules under natural sunlight with uniform light conditions on all the modules in the string and with partially shading one or more of the modules in the string to simulate and quantitatively detect the underperforming module(s) in a string.

The popularity of solar photovoltaic (PV) energy is growing across the globe with more than 500 GW installed in 2018 with a capacity of 640 GW in 2019. Improved PV module reliability minimizes the levelized cost of energy. Studying and accelerating encapsulant browning and solder bond degradation—two of the most commonly observed degradation modes in the field—in a lab requires replicating the stress conditions that induce the same field degradation modes in a controlled accelerated environment to reduce testing time.

Accelerated testing is vital in learning about the reliability of solar PV modules. The unique streamlined approach taken saves time and resources with a statistically significant number of samples being tested in one chamber under multiple experimental stress conditions that closely mirror field conditions that induce encapsulant browning and solder bond degradation. With short circuit current (Isc) and series resistance (Rs) degradation data sets at multiple temperatures, the activation energies (Ea) for encapsulant browning and solder bond degradation was calculated.

Regular degradation was replaced by the wear-out stages of encapsulant browning and solder bond degradation by subjecting two types of field-aged modules to further accelerated testing. For browning, the Ea calculated through the Arrhenius model was 0.37 ± 0.17 eV and 0.71 ± 0.07 eV. For solder bond degradation, the Arrhenius model was used to calculate an Ea of 0.12 ± 0.05 eV for solder with 2wt% Ag and 0.35 ± 0.04 eV for Sn60Pb40 solder.

To study the effect of types of encapsulant, backsheet, and solder on encapsulant browning and solder bond degradation, 9-cut-cell samples maximizing available data points while minimizing resources underwent accelerated tests described for modules. A ring-like browning feature was observed in samples with UV pass EVA above and UV cut EVA below the cells. The backsheet permeability influences the extent of oxygen photo-bleaching. In samples with solder bond degradation, increased bright spots and cell darkening resulted in increased Rs. Combining image processing with fluorescence imaging and electroluminescence imaging would yield great insight into the two degradation modes.

There is an entire industry that is focused on developing ESD compliant tooling using traditional manufacturing methods. This research work evaluates the feasibility to fabricate a PEEK-Carbon Nanotube composite filament for Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) Additive Manufacturing that is ESD compliant. In addition, it demonstrates that the FFF process can be used to print tools with the required accuracy, ESD compliance and mechanical properties necessary for the electronics industry at a low rate production level. Current Additive Manufacturing technology can print high temperature polymers, such as PEEK, with the required mechanical properties but they are not ESD compliant and require post processing to create a product that is. There has been some research conducted using mixed multi-wall and single wall carbon nanotubes in a PEEK polymers, which improves mechanical properties while reducing bulk resistance to the levels required to be ESD compliant. This previous research has been used to develop a PEEK-CNT polymer matrix for the Fused Filament Fabrication additive manufacturing process

This thesis introduces a new robotic leg design with three degrees of freedom that

can be adapted for both bipedal and quadrupedal locomotive systems, and serves as

a blueprint for designers attempting to create low cost robot legs capable of balancing

and walking. Currently, bipedal leg designs are mostly rigid and have not strongly

taken into account the advantages/disadvantages of using an active ankle, as opposed

to a passive ankle, for balancing. This design uses low-cost compliant materials, but

the materials used are thick enough to mimic rigid properties under low stresses, so

this paper will treat the links as rigid materials. A new leg design has been created

that contains three degrees of freedom that can be adapted to contain either a passive

ankle using springs, or an actively controlled ankle using an additional actuator. This

thesis largely aims to focus on the ankle and foot design of the robot and the torque

and speed requirements of the design for motor selection. The dynamics of the system,

including height, foot width, weight, and resistances will be analyzed to determine

how to improve design performance. Model-based control techniques will be used to

control the angle of the leg for balancing. In doing so, it will also be shown that it

is possible to implement model-based control techniques on robots made of laminate

materials.

Over the past century, the world has become increasingly more complex. Modern systems (i.e blockchain, internet of things (IoT), and global supply chains) are inherently difficult to comprehend due to their high degree of connectivity. Understanding the nature of complex systems becomes an acutely more critical skill set for managing socio-technical infrastructure systems. As existing education programs and technical analysis approaches fail to teach and describe modern complexities, resulting consequences have direct impacts on real-world systems. Complex systems are characterized by exhibiting nonlinearity, interdependencies, feedback loops, and stochasticity. Since these four traits are counterintuitive, those responsible for managing complex systems may struggle in identifying these underlying relationships and decision-makers may fail to account for their implications or consequences when deliberating systematic policies or interventions.

This dissertation details the findings of a three-part study on applying complex systems modeling techniques to exemplar socio-technical infrastructure systems. In the research articles discussed hereafter, various modeling techniques are contrasted in their capacity for simulating and analyzing complex, adaptive systems. This research demonstrates the empirical value of a complex system approach as twofold: (i) the technique explains systems interactions which are often neglected or ignored and (ii) its application has the capacity for teaching systems thinking principles. These outcomes serve decision-makers by providing them with further empirical analysis and granting them a more complete understanding on which to base their decisions.

The first article examines modeling techniques, and their unique aptitudes are compared against the characteristics of complex systems to establish which methods are most qualified for complex systems analysis. Outlined in the second article is a proof of concept piece on using an interactive simulation of the Los Angeles water distribution system to teach complex systems thinking skills for the improved management of socio-technical infrastructure systems. Lastly, the third article demonstrates the empirical value of this complex systems approach for analyzing infrastructure systems through the construction of a systems dynamics model of the Arizona educational-workforce system, across years 1990 to 2040. The model explores a series of dynamic hypotheses and allows stakeholders to compare policy interventions for improving educational and economic outcome measures.
