'My Great-Grandma Slept With Al Capone': A Theatrical Excavation of Family History is a creative project based on a true family story. My great-grandma was a nurse in the late 1920s and ended up having Al Capone as her patient. From this story, I developed a fourteen-page script and a concept trailer that discusses the heart and soul of my project. The goal of this project going forward is to create a limited series and/or a short play about my great-grandma's experiences as a nurse during Prohibition and The Great Depression.
Artist's Statement: This art piece embodies the power of connecting with your roots and using that as inspiration to both become closer with family and create art that can be dedicated to those you love. There's something incredibly emotional about parading your heart and your family's heart for all to see, and I can't help but wonder how the Capones have felt about their father, uncle, etc. being constantly subjected to creative impersonations. Because of this, I strived to be as truthful as possible in my portrayals of these legends, while still inviting creativity in to fill the gaps. What results is an art piece that allows these humans to be who they are, wholly and completely, with all the ups and downs that come with learning how to live within your given circumstances. - Hannah Hutchison

Only in recent decades have music libraries become more aware of the importance of preservation of musical scores and materials in their collections. It follows that the preservation goals in a library differ from those in a museum due to the specific purpose of the collecting institution. As a student of paper conservation in an art museum setting and a musician with classical training, I wanted to investigate the scope of art conservation as it applies to cultural heritage objects outside the realm of works of visual art in a museum—namely the musical scores and ephemera contained in the Bavicchi archive in the ASU Music Library Special Collections. The archive is a large, unexplored collection of materials pertaining to approximately ninety opuses composed by the teacher, conductor, and composer, John A. Bavicchi (1922-2012). These materials include final scores, drafts of scores, preliminary sketches, programs from performances, correspondence, news publications, publishing agreements, and financial records. Although these types of ephemera materials are transitory by nature and pose considerable problems for the institution responsible for their preservation, the goal of this project is to demonstrate the importance of preserving non-art objects related to non-visual artforms in a music library context, to show the value of musical ephemera in general, and to advocate for the care of the Bavicchi archive in particular. Using one Bavicchi composition, Opus 51, as a case study from which to develop a protocol for the preservation of the rest of the archive, I made an inventory of all seventy-four objects pertaining to Opus 51, executed and documented conservation treatment, and implemented proper housing for all objects. Making sure to consider how and where these archival materials are most likely to be used—for scholarly research in a music library—I established guidelines for evaluating condition and assigning treatment priority, provided descriptions of relevant remedial treatment procedures, and recommended rehousing and potential preservation practices. Additionally, I offered justification for my conservation work through the contextualization of the archival materials relating to Opus 51. I provided an initial musical analysis of the archival materials and compared the informational content of the Opus 51 ephemera to general information gathered from outside sources, with the intention of illustrating the need to preserve these materials in order to better understand Bavicchi’s compositional process and the public reception of his work.

This thesis traces the queer legacy of the Frankenstein myth from James Whale’s filmic adaptations, Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, to Mexico’s first adaptation of the myth, El Monstruo Resucitado (1953). Chano Urueta’s El Monstruo Resucitado adapted the Frankenstein legend not from Mary Shelley’s source text but from Whale’s films, which themselves are infused with the queer sensibilities of a homosexual director. This new Mexican Frankenstein myth created a Monster that both reflects the culture of the Hollywood context from which it is adapted and responds to its own unique Mexican backdrop. Discussed only superficially in monster studies scholarship, El Monstruo Resucitado has rarely been examined for its contributions to Mexican horror cinema or queer horror studies as a whole. This thesis explores El Monstruo Resucitado's utility as a queer parable by working through José Esteban Muñoz’s theory of Disidentifications, positioning the film as a cultural object valuable to queer identity formation for minoritarian audiences in Mexico. By doing so, this thesis aims to broaden the conversation surrounding the role of the monster in culture and highlight Mexican monster horror like El Monstruo Resucitado as significant to the global tradition of the monster movie.

Fortunately, a small team of doctors has developed a non-invasive electrical stimulation technology that can promote healing processes within the body, and the potential impact of this invention could change the way we approach mental health treatment forever. Aging is a universal process that every being encounters on their journey of life. The effect of dance as a form of improvement of physical and well-being on the aging body brings upon the question of the impact of somatic-based movement, specifically gestural movement on the perceptions of aging within older and younger adults through a bi-cultural lens of the United States and India. This was investigated using a series of creative partnership workshops that included listening, drawing, and culminating movement activities, followed by a group discussion about the creative process. There were four different participant groups: a group of college students taking an Aging in American Culture collegiate class, a Somatic Practices collegiate dance class, a group of older adults at the Tempe Multigenerational Center, and a group of older adults in Bangalore, India. Inter-generational and cross-cultural observations were discussed, and it was seen that the workshops were able to foster feelings of community and camaraderie among participants depending on the group’s relationship to dance-making. From the research, a dance performance was developed and performed specifically with women of color in ASU’s Dance program with the choreographic process discussed in detail, along with key takeaways about facilitating a multi-dimensional experience for the dancers and choreographer. Future directions for the work include working with intergenerational populations and researching community effects on gendered aging experiences across cultures in the dance world.

This creative project is a reference document explaining the fictional fantasy world of the in-progress novel Veil Us in Gold by Shepard Adkins. Using the framework of the anthropological concept of placemaking, I describe three countries featured in the manuscript, including information on history, government, daily lives, and more. These descriptions were influenced by collaboration with Adkins and historical research on Ancient Rome, Ancient Greece, and Enlightenment Russia. After completing the reference document, I interviewed Adkins to see how our collaboration in worldbuilding has shaped the revision process of their novel.

The study of broad therapeutic advantages of dance is a growing field of interdisciplinary study. Yet, direct health benefits of dance from a molecular standpoint are still largely unknown. Literature review of dance performance displays in birds as well as other creatures and use of creative tools to analyze the diverse, lifelong experiences of dancers helped shed some light on the subject. Although dance experience exposes harms tied to the social constraints of how the form is experiences buried under joyful takeaways of dance, research supports overall health benefits from moderate amounts of dance maintained in perfect equilibrium.

Though often viewed as a positive aspect of past, modern, and future interpersonal interaction, communities can be viewed under a microscope as a tool used by the human species to preserve oneself. Communities are used as a safety tool to assure the longevity of an individual. As a dancer and dancemaker, taking part in the art of dance challenges one's perception of large groups of bodies taking up space. Following a global pandemic, dancers and people alike were forced to find communities of much smaller sizes to appease the need to interact with other people. This caused the creation of safety pods and the urge to connect with others in ways that were not always favored. How did individuals suffer from a lack of interpersonal connection? Does the need for communities highlight a higher level of codependency amongst individuals who prefer relying on communities? Is this morally wrong? This thesis uses research obtained from ethical theories, travel research, and movement research to determine whether or not this action is morally right or wrong. This thesis uses an ethnographic style of writing to navigate through the creative process of dancemaking for an evening-length dance show, further analyzing the individual need for communities. This reflective writing defends the thesis and includes new revelations on the topic of communities and self-preservation.

Cannabinoid (CBD) is a product from the cannabis plant that has shown to provide many benefits and little risk of side effects. A survey was conducted with a focus on three populations: athletes, performers, and the general population. It was found that 23 out of 58 participants (40%) use CBD for a variety of reasons. 35% of CBD users use it for anxiety, 39% use it for soreness, and 26% use it for other reasons. Out of the 35 participants who do not use CBD 15 people said they would be willing to try CBD products. It was found that while people who use CBD found it to be effective many people throughout all three populations do not have much knowledge about CBD and its benefits. As more research is conducted and released, more people will be inclined to use it.
