The concepts of animal rights and animal welfare are often used interchangeably, but it is important to recognize their distinctions when conceptualizing an argument about animal welfare laws. The animal rights approach is the more radical, as its advocates advance the belief that humans should not use any products from of created by animals. On the other hand, animal welfare advocates set out to improve the legal structure that protects animals from suffering and push for more humane treatment. It is important to the movement to have laws that clearly define cruel acts and impose punishments to deter people from violating these laws. In order to make the laws better, we must examine where and how the laws are deficient before we can understand how to improve them. This paper will analyze why humans have an obligation to protect all animals from unjust and harmful cruelties inflicted, with a specific focus on Phoenix and Arizona's legal framework of anti-cruelty laws. The evaluation of these laws and how they are enforced exposes a disparity in our accountability to animals and our approach to their ultimate protection.

My mother died after a long battle with breast cancer in 2008. I was only nine when she was first diagnosed, and so much of my life has been shaped by her struggle for survival. She will always be the most amazing women I have ever known, and she taught me more about life, kindness, hope, and overcoming the odds than anyone else. I want to share my experience with you as a friend \u2014 not as a doctor, or a counselor, but as a friend. I want to tell you some of my stories with the emotions behind them. I will share how I learned t cope with whatever situation came our way and how I found unexpected ways to help my mom. I want you to find solace through our shared emotions even if they are at different times in our journeys. This is why in the following chapters, my stories are not chronological but categorized through the major emotions that drove my stories. I hope this book can help those who find themselves in similar situations to the one I found myself in when my mom picked me up from fourth grade with a bandana on her head instead of her normal, beautiful brown hair. This thesis is a creative exploration of emotions and finding hope in times of great loss.

In Mistvon, everyone is happy. The people there go about their daily duties with wistful smiles, and unburdened hearts, their worldly cares both trivial and meaningless. Jobs have been abolished, people are financially set, and everywhere the gleaming city of Mistvon burns brightly, a beacon of mankind. And yet, from the shadows, the Gentlemen lurk. They rule the citizens of Mistvon with an iron thumb that few even realize exists, destroying their creativity and robbing them of their free will; a result of the mysterious Avatos. Because of this, Gaven Vos, a citizen who has seen the truth, and is under the employ of the enigmatic Creator, must free Mistvon from the clutches of the evil Gentlemen. But, is the Creator truly what he says he is? And is their journey truly righteous? Through this, a story of political discourse, betrayals, and ambiguous morality, these questions are answered. But, the ultimate question may not be; do the ends justify the means?

Japanese animated film director Hayao Miyazaki is famous for his numerous film featuring female protagonists. These protagonists have been examined for their conformance and deviance with regard to widespread stereotypes of masculine and feminine traits. Miyazaki's female characters tend to exhibit nuanced and varied traits, with a balance of traditionally masculine and feminine characteristics. They also tend to demonstrate and moralize on larger social issues such as environmentalism and gender equality, advancing ideals for both Japanese and Western feminism. The status of these female protagonists as cultural icons is contrary to wider film trends that exclude women from the spotlight except when they conform to rigid gender roles.

The interaction between England and Scotland is complicated and continually changing. Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott examines this long-standing relationship through his various writings. Scott conveys a presence that is both acutely aware of the damages enacted upon Scotland by various English political efforts, and sensitive to the delicate relationship that the two regions had begun to form during his lifetime. Through a critical analysis of Scott's novel, Rob Roy, one can see the various strategies Scott used to balance the need to address prior controversies within the relationship, and the petition to move beyond the prior conflict and develop a mutual understanding of each culture. Through this, Scott is able to regenerate a sense of Scottish nationalism for his people, and encourage improved relations within the British Isles.

Executive Summary Finding Joy in the Journey is a sports philanthropy project I have designed to connect the Arizona State University Women's Basketball team with girls between the ages of 7-12 in the Phoenix community who have the same love for the game basketball. Through monthly team bonding events over a nine-month season, these young girls are able to build long lasting relationships with their role models and learn how to find the joy in the journey. Finding joy in the journey is key in our fast paced and on the go American lifestyle. The successes and bumps in the road, the good times and the bad, and the people along the way all contribute to help shape us into the people we are today. This program allows for 14 girls to have a scholarship to be on the Jr. ASU women's basketball team. The approximate budget for this project is $3000 per year and covers expenses for food and supplies at monthly team events as well as each of the girls to have season tickets for the ASU women's basketball home games. Funding is provided through boosters and fundraising efforts on the front end. Marketing efforts are made through the ASU Women's Basketball team's partnership with local elementary and middle schools through the character code game, and also through the database of the girls who attend basketball camp. Through a shared love of the game of basketball, ASU Women's Basketball is raising up a young generation of girls to be leaders by inspiring and teaching them all of the lessons the game of basketball can teach us about life.
