The tools developed for the use of investigating dynamical systems have provided critical understanding to a wide range of physical phenomena. Here these tools are used to gain further insight into scalar transport, and how it is affected by mixing. The aim of this research is to investigate the efficiency of several different partitioning methods which demarcate flow fields into dynamically distinct regions, and the correlation of finite-time statistics from the advection-diffusion equation to these regions.

For autonomous systems, invariant manifold theory can be used to separate the system into dynamically distinct regions. Despite there being no equivalent method for nonautonomous systems, a similar analysis can be done. Systems with general time dependencies must resort to using finite-time transport barriers for partitioning; these barriers are the edges of Lagrangian coherent structures (LCS), the analog to the stable and unstable manifolds of invariant manifold theory. Using the coherent structures of a flow to analyze the statistics of trapping, flight, and residence times, the signature of anomalous diffusion are obtained.

This research also investigates the use of linear models for approximating the elements of the covariance matrix of nonlinear flows, and then applying the covariance matrix approximation over coherent regions. The first and second-order moments can be used to fully describe an ensemble evolution in linear systems, however there is no direct method for nonlinear systems. The problem is only compounded by the fact that the moments for nonlinear flows typically don't have analytic representations, therefore direct numerical simulations would be needed to obtain the moments throughout the domain. To circumvent these many computations, the nonlinear system is approximated as many linear systems for which analytic expressions for the moments exist. The parameters introduced in the linear models are obtained locally from the nonlinear deformation tensor.

The main goal of this project is to study approximations of functions on circular and spherical domains using the cubed sphere discretization. On each subdomain, the function is approximated by windowed Fourier expansions. Of particular interest is the dependence of accuracy on the different choices of windows and the size of the overlapping regions. We use Matlab to manipulate each of the variables involved in these computations as well as the overall error, thus enabling us to decide which specific values produce the most accurate results. This work is motivated by problems arising in atmospheric research.

Chebfun is a collection of algorithms and an open-source software system in object-oriented Matlab that extends familiar powerful methods of numerical computation involving numbers to continuous or piecewise-continuous functions. The success of this strategy is based on the mathematical fact that smooth functions can be represented very efficiently by polynomial interpolation at Chebyshev points or by trigonometric interpolation at equispaced points for periodic functions. More recently, the system has been extended to handle bivariate functions and vector fields. These two new classes of objects are called Chebfun2 and Chebfun2v, respectively. We will show that Chebfun2 and Chebfun2v, and can be used to accurately and efficiently perform various computations on parametric surfaces in two or three dimensions, including path trajectories and mean and Gaussian curvatures. More advanced surface computations such as mean curvature flows are also explored. This is also the first work to use the newly implemented trigonometric representation, namely Trigfun, for computations on surfaces.

The recovery of edge information in the physical domain from non-uniform Fourier data is of importance in a variety of applications, particularly in the practice of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Edge detection can be important as a goal in and of itself in the identification of tissue boundaries such as those defining the locations of tumors. It can also be an invaluable tool in the amelioration of the negative effects of the Gibbs phenomenon on reconstructions of functions with discontinuities or images in multi-dimensions with internal edges. In this thesis we develop a novel method for recovering edges from non-uniform Fourier data by adapting the "convolutional gridding" method of function reconstruction. We analyze the behavior of the method in one dimension and then extend it to two dimensions on several examples.

The reconstruction of piecewise smooth functions from non-uniform Fourier data arises in sensing applications such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This thesis presents a new polynomial based resampling method (PRM) for 1-dimensional problems which uses edge information to recover the Fourier transform at its integer coefficients, thereby enabling the use of the inverse fast Fourier transform algorithm. By minimizing the error of the PRM approximation at the sampled Fourier modes, the PRM can also be used to improve on initial edge location estimates. Numerical examples show that using the PRM to improve on initial edge location estimates and then taking of the PRM approximation of the integer frequency Fourier coefficients is a viable way to reconstruct the underlying function in one dimension. In particular, the PRM is shown to converge more quickly and to be more robust than current resampling techniques used in MRI, and is particularly amenable to highly irregular sampling patterns.

Using object-oriented programming in MATLAB, a collection of functions, named Fourfun, has been created to allow quick and accurate approximations of periodic functions with Fourier expansions. To increase efficiency and reduce the number of computations of the Fourier transform, Fourfun automatically determines the number of nodes necessary for representations that are accurate to close to machine precision. Common MATLAB functions have been overloaded to keep the syntax of the Fourfun class as consistent as possible with the general MATLAB syntax. We show that the system can be used to efficiently solve several differential equations. Comparisons with Chebfun, a similar system based on Chebyshev polynomial approximations, are provided.

Physical limitations of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) introduce different errors in the image reconstruction process. The discretization and truncation of data under discrete Fourier transform causes oscillations near jump discontinuities, a phenomenon known as the Gibbs effect. Using Gaussian-based approximations rather than the discrete Fourier transform to reconstruct images serves to diminish the Gibbs effect slightly, especially when coupled with filtering. Additionally, a simplifying assumption is made that, during signal collection, the amount of transverse magnetization decay at a point does not depend on that point's position in space. Though this methodology significantly reduces operational run-time, it nonetheless introduces geometric error, which can be mitigated using Single-Shot (SS) Parse.

Imaging technologies such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) collect Fourier data and then process the data to form images. Because images are piecewise smooth, the Fourier partial sum (i.e. direct inversion of the Fourier data) yields a poor approximation, with spurious oscillations forming at the interior edges of the image and reduced accuracy overall. This is the well known Gibbs phenomenon and many attempts have been made to rectify its effects. Previous algorithms exploited the sparsity of edges in the underlying image as a constraint with which to optimize for a solution with reduced spurious oscillations. While the sparsity enforcing algorithms are fairly effective, they are sensitive to several issues, including undersampling and noise. Because of the piecewise nature of the underlying image, we theorize that projecting the solution onto the wavelet basis would increase the overall accuracy. Thus in this investigation we develop an algorithm that continues to exploit the sparsity of edges in the underlying image while also seeking to represent the solution using the wavelet rather than Fourier basis. Our method successfully decreases the effect of the Gibbs phenomenon and provides a good approximation for the underlying image. The primary advantages of our method is its robustness to undersampling and perturbations in the optimization parameters.

split cylinder is studied numerically solving the Navier--Stokes

equations. The cylinder is completely filled with fluid

and is split at the midplane. Three different types of boundary

conditions were imposed, leading to a variety of instabilities and

complex flow dynamics.

The first configuration has a strong background rotation and a small

differential rotation between the two halves. The axisymmetric flow

was first studied identifying boundary layer instabilities which

produce inertial waves under some conditions. Limit cycle states and

quasiperiodic states were found, including some period doubling

bifurcations. Then, a three-dimensional study was conducted

identifying low and high azimuthal wavenumber rotating waves due to

G’ortler and Tollmien–-Schlichting type instabilities. Over most of

the parameter space considered, quasiperiodic states were found where

both types of instabilities were present.

In the second configuration, both cylinder halves are in exact

counter-rotation, producing an O(2) symmetry in the system. The basic state flow dynamic

is dominated by the shear layer created

in the midplane. By changing the speed rotation and the aspect ratio

of the cylinder, the flow loses symmetries in a variety of ways

creating static waves, rotating waves, direction reversing waves and

slow-fast pulsing waves. The bifurcations, including infinite-period

bifurcations, were characterized and the flow dynamics was elucidated.

Additionally, preliminary experimental results for this case are

presented.

In the third set up, with oscillatory boundary conditions, inertial

wave beams were forced imposing a range of frequencies. These beams

emanate from the corner of the cylinder and from the split at the

midplane, leading to destructive/constructive interactions which

produce peaks in vorticity for some specific frequencies. These

frequencies are shown to be associated with the resonant Kelvin

modes. Furthermore, a study of the influence of imposing a phase

difference between the oscillations of the two halves of the cylinder

led to the interesting result that different Kelvin

modes can be excited depending on the phase difference.

Finite element simulations modeling the hydrodynamic impact loads subjected to an elastomeric coating were performed to develop an understanding of the performance and failure mechanisms of protective coatings for cavitating environments.

In this work, two major accomplishments were achieved: 1) scaling laws were developed from hydrodynamic principles and numerical simulations to allow conversion of measured distributions of pressure peaks in a cavitating flow to distributions of microscopic impact loadings modeling individual bubble collapse events, and 2) a finite strain, thermo-mechanical material model for polyurea-based elastomers was developed using a logarithmic rate formulation and implemented into an explicit finite element code.

Combining the distribution of microscopic impact loads and finite element modeling, a semi-quantitative predictive framework is created to calculate the energy dissipation within the coating which can further the understanding of temperature induced coating failures.

The influence of coating thickness and elastomer rheology on the dissipation of impact energies experienced in cavitating flows has also been explored.

The logarithmic formulation has many desired features for the polyurea constitutive model, such as objectivity, integrability, and additive decomposition compatibility.

A review and discussion on the kinematics in large deformation, including a comparison between Lagrangian and Eulerian descriptions, are presented to explain the issues in building rate-dependent constitutive models in finite strains.

When comparing the logarithmic rate with other conventional rates in test examples, the logarithmic rate shows a better conservation of objectivity and integrability.

The modeling framework was validated by comparing predictions against temperatures measured within coatings subjected to a cavitating jet.

Both the experiments and models show that the temperatures generated, even under mild flow conditions, raise the coating temperature by a significant amount, suggesting that the failure of these coatings under more aggressive flows is thermally induced.

The models show that thin polyurea coatings synthesized with shorter molecular weight soft segments dissipate significantly less energy per impact and conduct heat more efficiently.

This work represents an important step toward understanding thermally induced failure in elastomers subjected to cavitating flows, which provides a foundation for design and optimization of coatings with enhanced erosion resistance.
