Sexual education in public schools varies drastically across the United States in the curriculum, teaching style and mandatory status. Recently a change in curriculum has occurred in some states to include education on healthy relationships and consent both within and beyond sexual health education. Educating students of different ages on healthy relationships and consent has numerous benefits including developing empathy and respect for others in addition to decreasing domestic violence and sexual assault cases, however only a handful of states have elected to incorporate this education into schools. This study will compare and analyze different sexual health curriculums across the United States to demonstrate the need and benefit of educating students of all age levels about healthy relationships and consent. The goal of this study is to create a proposal that will allow the incorporation of healthy relationship and consent education into Arizona public schools.

This work is a mixed-methods study performed to evaluate the variance in patients’ hospital experiences at different stages of life. A survey of patients’ personal experience was designed based on information on healthcare practice from peer-reviewed journals and concepts from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, 2020). This study examined differences in how patients perceive memories of the hospital at the time of admission to the perception of their memories in the present day. The strength of association between past perceptions of overall experience with various aspects of the hospital experience was analyzed by calculating eta. The percent of variance in perception of experience that is explained by each aspect of the experience was then calculated by eta squared. Results were separated by age group at the time of admission to determine factors most likely to affect each group’s experience. Age groups 10 years and younger and 11-14 years were both concerned with the atmosphere of the hospital. All groups complained about their quality of sleep and the quality of the food, however, a majority of the complaints came from age groups 15-17 years and 18-21 years. The four age groups from 22-35+ years did not have enough participants to draw age specific conclusions by themselves and were therefore combined into one group, 22+ years. The 22+ years age group complained the most about noise, they complained about day noise in addition to night noise.

Advancing medical and surgical care has cause for there to be a rapidly growing population of adults with congenital heart disease (CHD). Now that pediatric patients with CHD are living into adulthood there is a problem with the lack of transitional care these patients receive. The lack of transitional care has led to many issues that adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) patients face such as a lack of autonomy and knowledge, which contributes to an increased chance for a lapse in their care. Lapses in care lead to greater risks of heart failure, arrhythmias, morbidity, and premature death. Research revealed that there is a gap in the transitional care process for patients with CHD from the pediatric to adult healthcare setting that needs to be addressed. Nurses can aid in this process by establishing habits of independence as well as teaching CHD patients about their condition and its care requirements at a younger age. This creative project aims to educate nurses working in the pediatric cardiovascular acute care setting on ways they can aid in the transition process of patients with CHD as they grow out of the pediatric care setting and into the adult care setting in order to establish continuity of care.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to examine recent nursing textbooks’ portrayal of gender, weight, and diagnosis in eating disorder exemplars, and compare the textbook presentation to prevalence rates as published within the textbooks themselves.

CONTEXT: Eating disorders are often portrayed as afflicting underweight women with a diagnosis of anorexia nervosa. Demographics of people outside this stereotype face health disparities in illness recognition and treatment. Passive exposure to information on eating disorders can reduce stereotypical beliefs among nursing students, which has the potential to improve patient care.

METHOD: Case studies, practice questions, vignettes, and care plans from eight psychiatric nursing textbooks were analyzed for portrayal of the three research variables.

DATA and RESULTS: Men were not significantly underrepresented in the exemplars. Transgender clients, clients of normal or overweight status, and clients with diagnoses other than anorexia nervosa were significantly underrepresented from eating disorder exemplars.

CONCLUSION: Textbooks should be adjusted to include more exemplars from underrepresented demographics of clients with eating disorders.

Diabetes mellitus impacts nations across the globe, and the incidence is increasing at an alarming rate, especially among low and middle income countries (World Health Organization, 2020). Mexico faces specific challenges in the diabetes epidemic that creates a disproportionate increase in premature mortality as well as healthcare costs (Arredondo & Reyes, 2013). The rural residents of Naco, Mexico face additional barriers related to healthcare access and education; these barriers elevate the importance of diabetes management and prevention strategies (Valenzuela et al., 2003). This paper will evaluate community-based diabetes interventions relevant to the Mexican community and identify characteristics of successful interventions. The health impact, role, structure, and development of community gardens in Naco will be evaluated using multiple community-based frameworks followed by clear translatable recommendations for stakeholders.

This thesis highlights the impact that nursing and collaborative care can have for patients in the acute care setting who have a mental illness, with a specific focus on Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and related disorders. Holistic care for patients admitted into the acute care setting with a comorbidity of OCD includes exploration of nursing interventions and collaborative therapies, namely journaling, mindfulness or meditation, breathing, self-help methods, exercise, massage, acupuncture or electroacupuncture, yoga, and nutrition. Each intervention was evaluated in the context of how a nurse can apply or facilitate the intervention in an acute care setting. Nurses and health professionals are encouraged to utilize these interventions and to be creative in their treatments, taking into consideration all aspects of a patient: mental, physical, and otherwise.

Nowadays, the word mindfulness has become popular in a different part of the world especially in school and work environment to practice self-care through meditations and other mindfulness-based interventions. Mindfulness means simply being aware of the present and anchoring our self at the moment without any judgments. Additionally, there are plenty of ways to practice mindfulness whether through focusing our attention on our breathing, mindful walking, yoga, tai-chi, and many more. Students are often bombarded with much information from their academics but at the same time with their tasks and responsibilities outside of their academics. The school environment encourages students to thrive in the community to learn and be the best version of themselves, however, this could lead to some depressive disorders such as anxiety, stress, and the feeling of overwhelm. I, myself experienced having anxiety and a high level of stress throughout my college journey. My thesis focuses on the importance of equitable mindfulness including different interventions to practice self-care and the importance of being a resilient student in a thriving community. Moreover, along with my thesis, I created the Be Present (BPRSNT) website blog, which is an interactive tool and resource to students and the community to highlights the benefits of mindfulness and ways to overcome some challenges. Since almost everyone has access to online technology and information the main goal of the Be Present is to disseminate information about the importance of practicing self-care specifically in a robust and fast phase community by having a positive mindset and a mindful living. Aside from the website blog, I also created a personalized journal which is a tool that can help students and the community to practice mindfulness through writing whether coming up with to-do lists or journaling the events that happen in their life. It is also a good and fun way to document innovative ideas and passions.

A mobile phone application was designed as part of an X-Prize challenge at Arizona State University (ASU). The team created an application that displays 4D visualization of time sensitive contagion data, specifically focusing on the Ebola Virus Disease. The application, named “Ebola Resource Decision Evaluator” (ERDE), is a tool to aid in resource allocation for decision-makers during epidemics and outbreaks. The predictive algorithm was based on the SIR Model—susceptible, infected, and recovered (or immune). We adapted this predictive model into our application to forecast weeks forward the Ebola incidence in three cities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The current 2D map used by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) displays only the number of deaths in a city caused by the outbreak. But, the cities differ in ways 2D cannot convey. We implemented the augmented reality (AR) aspect to give more meaning to data and to give decision-makers interactive 4D city-by-city comparisons. The outbreak is ongoing as of September 2019 and ASU has committed to hosting the application for other healthcare workers to use. The application incorporates the most recent data on the disease and updates to visualize how many are predicted to become infected given X units of vaccine. We are able to use the data and compare the effectiveness to other cities. After this collection of data, professionals would determine the most efficient action to take against the spread of the disease.

Almost from the beginning of time, humankind has searched for the secret to longevity. Early on in ancient Greece, many mythologies centered around that of Ambrosia, a holy ‘nectar’ through which gods gained their immortality (Maaz, 2006). As mentioned in the Iliad and the Odyssey, it was believed this honey-like nectar could heal wounds, resurrect the dead and provide immortality. One of China’s earliest emperor’s, Qin Shi Haug of the Qin Dynasty, ordered a nationwide search for a potion of eternal life (“How China's first emperor,” 2017). Qin commissioned a number of alchemists to create a sort of mixture from substances such as cinnabar, jade, and hematite, as these were believed to increase longevity in the person who consumed them (“How China's first emperor,” 2017). In India, the elixir of life has many names, and Indian alchemists spent a great deal of time experimenting with mercury and other minerals in hopes to find the key to immortality (Rastogi et al., 2015). While there have been great advances throughout history to increasing longevity – worldwide life expectancy is at an all-time high – we have yet to find the elixir of life (World Health Organization, 2016). Attempts on finding the secret to a longer life can be seen throughout the rest of history in modern medicine, antibiotics, vaccines, new fad diets, and studies on happiness and purpose. One of the most recent and promising studies on increasing lifespan is the study of Blue Zones.
Blue Zones are geographic clusters that are known as longevity regions (Huang & Jacquez, 2017). These regions are seen to have a larger number and distribution of centenarians among their populations compared to the rest of the world. There are currently five Blue Zones across the globe: Ikaria, Greece, Loma Linda, California, Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica, Okinawa, Japan, and Sardinia, Italy. Blue Zones have become a catalyst for researchers to unlock the secret to longevity. The most well-known and extensive Blue Zone research, led by Dan Buettner and his National Geographic team, discovered that all of the Blue Zones have nine common factors (Buettner, 2012). These factors have been developed into pillars that Buettner believes are the key to a longer, healthier and happier life. The nine pillars are: 80% rule, plant slant, wine at 5, move naturally, down shift, purpose, belong, right tribe, and loved ones first. It is proposed that by incorporating these pillars into one’s life, the likelihood of living to be a centenarian increases exponentially.

This study was conducted to determine how consistently parents rated their child's temperament regarding taking them places, how easy or difficult it is to soothe them, how easily they get upset, and how much they want to be held. The questionnaires were distributed, and the 55 participants were given time to complete them. After being returned the data was analyzed and it was found that parents rate their children's temperament consistently throughout the questionnaire. Children who were rated as having a more challenging temperament in some questions tended to be related as having a challenging temperament in all areas, while children who were rated as having a more positive temperament in some questions were related as having a positive temperament in all areas. The results showed that analyzing different characteristics that a child shows throughout daily life can be used to determine that child’s temperament.
