Cases of sudden unexpected infant deaths (SUID) have taken thousands of lives of infants from families each year. The dangers of accidental suffocation, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDs), and even unknown causes have been prevalent throughout history. There are several behavioral risk factors that are associated with SUIDS and SIDS, which threaten the life of infants less than one year of age because they are in their vulnerable state of being. Being cautious of the crib environment, sleeping position, and co-sleeping can all help in reducing the risk of developing SIDS. The goal of this project is to continue to spread awareness regarding preventable measures to protect infants from unintentional deaths. These risks are modifiable and can help reduce the decline of health and help first-time parent(s) and caregivers protect their young.

Over the course of two semesters, many components went into creating “The Nursing Student Community: Modules to Augment the Positive Impact of Social Support”. These components can be divided into the research, the creative project, and the combination of both. The research started with the question, “Is there a place for student-driven resources to improve upper-division nursing students’ academic success?”. To answer this question, the stress levels of average Americans, students in nursing school, and students in other baccalaureate programs were compared via standardized stress surveys. Once it was discovered that nursing students’ stress tends to trend higher, the reasons why were researched and broken down into three categories: the clinical experience, professional and social relationships, and grades. To combat these stress levels, it was found that the main coping strategies included social support, exercise, and mindfulness. The creative project, seen in the deliverable as screenshots of the Canvas course, is nine different modules focused on providing advice for nursing school and guidance on how to utilize the coping strategies of social support, exercise, and mindfulness. The combination of both includes a reflection on the experience, as well as the PowerPoint used during the defense of the thesis.

Healthcare is necessary and vital to the longevity of our population. Countries with the resources to provide advanced healthcare have opted for a multitude of systems for providing care. This paper will examine the price of one drug (insulin) and what it demonstrates about the United States healthcare system. It will further present healthcare and the access to safe treatment as a human right, one which has been repeatedly trespassed for profit by the largest companies. The tactics taken by these companies, all through legal routes, prioritize profit over people. It ensures a lower quality of care and a suppression of new drug research. Insulin is a demonstrative drug for the state of healthcare in the United State. Its widespread use affects access to care and costs can be easily compared to prices in other developed countries. Although not the only drug with exorbitant prices, insulin pricing is an example of a troubling trend in healthcare.

The aim of this thesis is to provision prelicensure nursing faculty at Arizona State University with a supplemental resource and presentation on inclusivity, with specific respect to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transexual, Queer (LGBTQ+) demographic. Background research posits that prelicensure nursing faculty possess limited information about how to teach students to provide inclusive care and communicate respectfully with patients in the LGBTQ+ population group. This project synthesizes current research pertaining to health inequities within this demographic, and summarizes reported patient care experiences of those within this demographic to illustrate a need for prelicensure faculty education in this area. Information from this research was extrapolated, and a supplemental resource regarding inclusivity created, which was presented to prelicensure nursing faculty at a staff meeting using an in-person modality. A survey was conducted at the conclusion of this educational presentation, gathering anonymous demographic data, as well as opinions as to the usefulness of the presentation in the setting of prelicensure nursing education. Results were then analyzed thematically, with 70% of those surveyed currently incorporating some form of LGBTQ+ education within their curriculum. These results suggest the majority of surveyed prelicensure faculty found the educational presentation and accompanying resource both useful and informative, and intend to apply information learned to their future practice as a nursing educator. These findings are significant, as they provide justification for continuing education and the necessity for additional learning experiences in this area.

Bleeding control education has taken a much more prominent focus in saving lives over the past decade. While many non-medically trained civilians are receiving Stop the Bleed training, throughout their time as students, baccalaureate nursing students prominently struggle in pre-hospital emergencies. Not only would the implementation of Stop the Bleed education into baccalaureate nursing improve client outcomes, it can further spread and share the message of bleeding control, as well as enhance the student experience.

When the COVID-19 pandemic emerged on an international scale, the disruption of routine and social interactions caused challenges in mental health, as people began to self-isolate and confine themselves from the world. Although the sudden interruption of social interaction led to stress and anxiety, human-animal interactions have shown a decrease in stress, anxiety, depression, and feelings of loneliness and social isolation. The purpose of this thesis is to determine whether companion animals influence mental health, specifically depression and anxiety, in college-aged students who attended the Arizona State University Downtown Campus during the 2020-2021 academic school year.
