This year marks the 50th anniversary of the passing of Title IX, a piece of legislation which aims for dismantling gender discrimination. Even with such actions females, especially Black females are not proportionally represented in the world of sports. Due to this phenomenon, a study was funded by the Global Sport Institute to look at barriers for Black Women and Girls sport participation. Focus groups and interviews were used to gather data. They utilized a semi-structured approach using open-ended questions, and were recorded and later transcribed. After a secondary data analysis was performed on the focus group and interview transcripts it was found that community views and resources play an important role in the sports participation for Black girls and women. The topics of legislation history, schools, resources, finances, access, and media views were further researched in order to understand their impact on Black girls and women. A public service announcement (PSA) video was created in order to communicate these findings in a more accessible and modern way. The goal of the PSA video is to not only educate the public about this problem concerning Black girls and women but to also empower and encourage communities to fix it.

The future of driving is largely headed towards autonomous vehicles, and this is clear with companies such as Tesla, Waymo, and even tech giant Apple. Many professionals predict that autonomous vehicles will likely be commercially available and legal to use in some places by the late 2020s [15]. There are some benefits to the rapid development of autonomous vehicle controllers, such as more independence for those who can’t drive due to impairments, the potential for reduced traffic, as well as possibly decreasing the number of accidents. Though these are promising prospects, there are ethical concerns regarding the implementation of such technology. The goal of this thesis is to provide an introductory literature review that discusses the history of autonomous vehicles, different levels of autonomy, ethical considerations in autonomous systems, and prior work on characterizing human driving behaviors and implementing these behaviors with autonomous vehicle controllers. Finally, recommendations are proposed for data collection on human driving behaviors in an ongoing NSF-funded project at Arizona State University, “Embodiment of Human Values Profiles in Autonomous Vehicles via Psychomimetic Controller Design.”

People with disabilities are underrepresented in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) workforce (NSF, 2016). One way to increase representation of people with disabilities in STEM fields is by supporting students with disabilities (SWDs) at the undergraduate level. In undergraduate education in the United States, SWDs represent approximately 19% of the undergraduate community (U.S. Census Bureau, 2021). However, SWDs have lower graduation and retention rates. This is particularly true for STEM majors, where SWDs make up about 9% of the STEM community in higher education. The AAC&U has defined a list of High-Impact Practices (HIPs), which are active learning practices and experiences that encourage deep learning by promoting student engagement, and could ultimately support student retention (AAC&U). To date, student-centered disability research has not explored the extent to which SWDs participate in HIPs. We hypothesized that SWDs are less likely than students without disabilities to be involved in HIPs and that students who identify as having severe disabilities would participate in HIPs at lower rates. In this study, we conducted a national survey to examine involvement in HIPs for students with disabilities in STEM. We found that disability status significantly affects the probability of participation in undergraduate research, but is not a significant factor for participation in most other HIPs. We also found that self-reported severity of disability did not significantly impact participation in HIPs, though we observed trends that students reporting higher severity generally reported lower participation in HIPs. Our open-ended responses did indicate that SWDs still faced barriers to participation in HIPs.

This creative project examines Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and Disney’s Frozen, focusing on how women are portrayed and treated. I use feminist literature as a lens to analyze both movies in the “Artist Piece” section. I believe it is important to scrutinize the way female characters are depicted because these movies are presented to children as idealized fairy tales. After critiquing both movies, I include a feminist retelling of Beauty and the Beast and Frozen. I use feminist literature to retell these fairy tales with empowered female depictions.

A significant sub-market within student affairs has been long ignored and broken: Student housing success. Research shows that strong relationships between students that live together are crucial to the well-being and academic success of that student. The problem is that universities have not figured out a standard way to group students effectively with some universities opting to market this inefficiency as a normal part of the college experience. For our thesis as a part of Founders Lab, we created our company, RiZing, to tackle this inefficiency. RiZing addresses the student-housing gap and proves that the lack of effective matching can be solved with the right people and of course, video games. Both students and higher education institutions are desperately trying to solve this problem. General event service vendors are racing just as quickly to serve this collegiate market and are extremely motivated to work with anyone who does. As the world today is becoming increasingly digitized, the founders of RiZing believe that the solution to building and maintaining strong connections with peers is possible through leveraging technology such as video games to create strong personal bonds.

If you've spent any amount of time in fan circles, or even any community that discusses media, you've no doubt heard of the Mary Sue. A Mary Sue is a character who, through positive personality traits, skills, and aspects of their appearance, warps the story so that they are the most interesting thing in the story's universe. The Mary Sue stereotype, however, can be used for good as a good basis for an engaging and intriguing story, provided the author considers more than simply their own interests - in fact, so can many stereotypes, whether existing solely in fan communities or branching out into more mainstream fiction. As such, I present a short story starring "M.S.", a very basic Mary Sue who is aware of her status and utterly despises the lack of meaningful action in her life. When one of her close friends shows symptoms of becoming a Sue herself, M.S. brings together a group of equally stereotypical friends - from the Gay Best Friend to the Spicy Latina - and, through their impromptu intervention, learns some things about them - and about herself.

Since the early 2010s, there seems to be a shift from the dominant Eurocentric beauty ideal to a new beauty standard that embodies more ethnic features, reflected in the growing number of women who want to enhance or adopt ethnic features through cosmetic procedures. As more white women adopt this new beauty standard, research into how perceptions of race are shifting is warranted and thus I explore the following question: What can we learn from white women who have undergone cosmetic procedures to appear less white and how are contemporary beauty standards changing perceptions of race?

Lunar meteorites are created when an asteroid impacts the Moon. In such events, the lunar surface, known as regolith, can experience extreme pressures and temperature conditions. Some of this regolith material can be ejected from the Moon and enter interplanetary space where it can be captured by Earth's gravity. Even after falling to Earth, the minerals of lunar meteorites preserve the history and conditions of lunar impact processes. One such mineral that has gained attention recently is tissintite due to its relatively specific temperature and pressure formation conditions. The lunar meteorite NWA 13967 and its mineral assemblage provided an opportunity for comparison to other lunar meteorites (Zhang et al. 2021). Based on its mineralogy and petrography, NWA 13967 likely experienced peak pressures of 18 to 24 GPa and peak temperatures above 2000℃, as indicated by the presence of intergranular melt, vesicles, and corundum. The occurrence of tissintite-II and coesite suggest crystallization during cooling and decompression, while other high pressure minerals likely back-transformed to lower pressure polymorphs.

Literature on the topics of education and religion suggests that there is a relationship between the two, one which could be assessed as positive or negative depending on the religion. One religion whose impact on people’s educational experience has recently become of interest is the Jehovah’s Witness religion. By analyzing the narratives of people who once practiced as Jehovah’s Witnesses, this paper sought to investigate how religion can impact people’s educational experience, and whether there is a positive or negative relationship. I utilized questions from the Life Story Interview with a framework of analysis that corresponds to common themes in narrative research. My data results consist of narratives from three different participants, which I analyzed according to different narrative themes. The analysis of my data indicated that active members of the Jehovah’s Witness community admitted to feeling less confident in pursuing education. This finding indicated that Jehovah’s Witnesses as students have unmet needs during their years of primary education, such as social support from peers and family members and an understanding of how educational opportunities would benefit them. Findings of the study also indicate that high school teachers might be well-positioned to provide social support and educational information for students in religions like the Jehovah’s Witness religion. Future research could focus on investigating the best practices for teachers to utilize when meeting the needs of students who belong not just to the Jehovah’s Witness religion but to religious minority groups overall.

There has been a recent push to examine the materials that nature is able to synthesize and consider whether the materials that humans have invented are geomimetic in nature, and whether designing nature-inspired materials is economically and environmentally beneficial. Mesoporous silica represents a class of materials with pore sizes of 2-50 nm and has been studied in catalysis, separations, and drug delivery. It has generally been made using organosilicon precursors, but in this work, we demonstrate for the first time the successful synthesis of mesoporous silica with uniform mesoporosity of 10 nm using the mineral forsterite (Mg2SiO4) as a silica source, providing a potentially cheaper and more Earth-friendly route to making this technologically important material. Forsterite was synthesized by a solid-state chemistry route and underwent dissolution-reprecipitation in an aqueous acid solution containing the soft template surfactant, Pluronic P123. The formation of forsterite was confirmed with X-ray diffraction (XRD), the successful templating of surfactant was demonstrated with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), the surface area was determined through Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, and pore size and distribution were demonstrated with Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) analysis. The synthesized mesoporous silica at optimal conditions has surface area of 740 m2/g and pore volume of 1.4 mL/g.
