My approach to performing contemporary music, like many others, is centeredaround storytelling that merges the intention of the composer with my own interpretation. The balance between the two is unique for every work, as well as the sources of inspiration that shape each interpretation. In some cases, it works well to rely heavily on the historical context of the piece and the specific inspiration and process of the composer. In other cases, the composer desires more freedom and flexibility in the performance of their work, and the story of the piece is woven from the threads of personal stories, emotions, and imagery of the performer. For this project, I made audio recordings of three pieces including Seare Farhat’s Three Children’s Songs for Singing Percussionist, Keiko Abe’s Marimba d’Amore, and Thomas Kotcheffs Obbligato Snare Drum Music No. 1: The Power of Love. I then used these recordings to make music videos that blend elements of pop music videos and classical performance videos, using performance footage as well as narrative and abstract visuals to experiment with video making as a creative outlet while building a performance portfolio that represents me as an artist. In addition to a reflection of my process, this document is also designed as a resource for performers who are interested in learning how to make their own audio and video recordings, covering topics including project planning and preparation, working with collaborators, selecting gear, practicing for studio recordings, and designing and producing videos.

The practice strategies that musicians employ can be made more effective by leveraging existing research about memory and learning. Musicians often use strategies that feel intuitive, such as massed practice and rote repetition, but that research has proven ineffective. When they do employ strategies that are effective, such as varied practice and chunking, they often do not understand the reasons why they are effective and therefore cannot use the principles behind effective learning to generate new approaches when faced with an unfamiliar challenge or learning plateau. In this paper, I propose that, through developing knowledge of the research surrounding learning and memory, musicians can acquire insight into the learning process and develop the ability to self-generate effective practice strategies that address issues specific to their own practice. As a result, they can avoid common learning pitfalls and gain greater confidence in their ability to approach learning complicated skills and taking on big projects. This paper examines and distills recent research of effective learning into an in-depth and practical document for use by musicians. Additionally, this document interprets and applies existing research-based learning strategies—such as retrieval practice, spaced repetition, varied practice, interleaved practice, and chunking—to musical practice through the lens of contemporary percussion repertoire. Readers of this work will develop an in-depth understanding of memory and learning and be able to apply that information practically and immediately in their own practice.

A Soldier’s Symphony is a three-movement work for symphony orchestra. The three movements are as follows: I – Sonata Allegro; II – Passacaglia; III – Rondo. A performance at the given metronome markings in the score will last approximately 30 minutes. Instrumentation is piccolo, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, English horn, 2 B-flat clarinets, B-flat bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon, 4 French horns in F, 3 trumpets in B-flat, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani and strings.In this paper, following introductory material, I write about my combat deployments to Iraq as a U.S. Army soldier and my struggles with psychological war wounds after I returned to the United States, then describe how these experiences and wounds shaped A Soldier’s Symphony. I also write about four composers, Sergei Prokofiev, George Antheil, Daphne Oram and Dennis Smalley, whose music and ideas influenced my approach to composing A Soldier’s Symphony. After presenting an overview analysis of each of my work’s three movements, I conclude by discussing my public and private purposes for composing this work. My public purpose for the work is to raise peoples’ awareness of the true scope of war’s human cost, while my private purpose is to help me bear the personal cost of my own war experiences. The full score of A Soldier’s Symphony is found in Appendix A.

ABSTRACT This recording and commissioning project was inspired by a concert from The Library of Congress, The Boccaccio Project. Three composers, Shawn Head, Nick Dulworth, and Bill Clay were commissioned to write works reflecting on their experiences during the coronavirus pandemic. The purpose of this project is to expand the repertoire for solo cello, to serve as an artistic response to the coronavirus pandemic, to promote these brilliant composers, and to provide an opportunity to make music with friends during a time of isolation. This written document includes a discussion of the collaborative process of commissioning and preparing these works, and an analysis of each piece. Scores and recordings of these works are provided at the end of the document.

While much has been written on the history of Education Concerts in the United States, there is a void in research focused on actual content, structure, and purposes of these concerts. This document seeks to fill this void through a detailed examination of salient aspects of Education Concerts, including programming, structure, rehearsal, and performance considerations. In conjunction with my research, I will draw on my first-hand experience as Associate Conductor of the Seattle Symphony, providing a glimpse into the creative challenges and solutions that confront a contemporary orchestra. Additionally, my research endeavors to discover ways of transforming the historically rigid model of orchestral operations into a structure that embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion, encourages connections, and sparks curiosity. The goal of this research, therefore, is to provide tangible references and practical guidance to the conductor or administrator who is venturing into the richness of Education Concert programming and performance in today’s everchanging orchestral landscape.

Chamber music is a burgeoning part of the modern guitarist’s repertoire, and few instruments compliment the guitar as well as the viola. Through production of an album of music for viola and guitar, this repertoire is showcased. While the duo works together very well, there is still not too much repertoire written for it. By examining each of the recorded works and discussing their successful compositional ideas, as well as some flaws and solutions to those issues, a groundwork for writing for viola and guitar can be laid. Also included is a discussion of general ensemble considerations, a new original composition for the duo, and information regarding recording set-up. The pieces recorded and discussed are Echoes of Autumn by Stephen Dodgson, 5 Fachadas by Javier Farías, One Stops Searching, One Grows Silent by Klaus Hinrich Stahmer, Folklore III by Gilbert Biberian, Sonate by Érik Marchelie, and 2 Pieces After Danielewski by Bill White.
