The policy design process in the United States has been guiding policymakers for decades. In order to keep up with the developing sustainability challenges that the US is facing, a new method of policy design needs to be determined for long-lasting, sustainable change. Human-centered design principles provide a new, unique perspective for analyzing sustainability challenges. Through the integration of human-centered design principles into policy systems, a new framework for policy design can be created. Through this project, a new framework that allows for the adaptation to new technologies, scientific information, and developments in the sustainability crisis to be accounted for and adequately addressed in future policies has been created.

Historical, Legal, and Attitudinal Shifts of Rape Legislation and Prosecution in the U.S.

The concept of rape has been a prominent part of historical U.S. criminal law, and legislation and statutes have changed significantly over time. Despite numerous reforms, however, there is still a lack of reporting, arrests, and convictions for sexual assault cases. This is due to several factors influencing the judgement of criminal justice actors, such as how cases are handled by police officers and prosecutors, who decide whether to further investigate a case, send the case to prosecution for sentencing, or bring the case to trial. Some of these influences include legal and extra-legal factors and certain beliefs or assumptions about sexual assault victims, which affect these officials’ discretionary decisions. As a result, criminal justice officials tend to dismiss or unfound a sexual assault case, especially with acquaintance rape, contributing to the substantial lack of arrests and convictions. These facts, which are examined in the paper, emphasize the need to reassess our criminal justice system's current response to sexual assault cases. This includes adjusting the evaluation markers for prosecutors, improving the communication between the relevant criminal justice actors, and implementing evaluations of prosecutorial ethics and community satisfaction.

Simplifying science means more than just making science understandable for people of lower chronological age, it also encompasses making science more accessible to people with a lower educational age. Through their “Embryo Tales,” Ask a Biologist discusses topics such as fetal alcohol syndrome, ectopic pregnancies, polio, etc. and the science behind them in an easy-to-understand manner. The Ask a Biologist materials are directed at a younger audience in terms of educational age compared to most textbooks and other sources, which allows them to communicate information to people who otherwise may not comprehend the science at hand. As Ask a Biologist states, their main goal is to “increase communication between scientists and the public” (Ask a biologist). They increase the cognition of the public by using a readability level checker to keep each sentence easy to understand, implementing well thought-out analogies throughout the article, incorporating helpful pictures, and including an engaging, related story at the beginning of each article. This thesis explains studies both for and agains those techniques aiming to make science-related topics more understandable. The thesis encompasses some of my own Embryo Tales with an analysis of them, highlights my role in shaping Embryo Tales into what they are today, and also details how I will apply what I learned to my career as a future physician.

The Inaugural EmpoweRanch Roundup: Fundraising for Nonprofit Organizations

Fundraising is a difficult yet critical function of nonprofit organizations. Special events make up a portion of fundraising strategy, and this project covers the basic components for throwing an inaugural event – one that the nonprofit organization has not done before but would like to continue to host regularly, typically annually – as it compares to my personal experience spearheading the Inaugural EmpoweRanch Roundup. When organizing any event, the first step is to define the purpose of the event by establishing a vision and goals. When establishing the purpose, consider what the funds from the event will directly pay for— the more specific you can get, the better. Donors want to see the impact they are making through their contributions, which will be clear if the purpose and projected profit allocation is communicated well. After establishing the time, date, and location, one should consider staff structure, volunteer management, organization, budgeting, print and digital marketing, social media marketing, risk management, site operations, food and beverage, accessibility, and sponsorships. Sponsorships become increasingly important depending on the budget for the event. After the execution of the event, it is important to evaluate and consider what improvements could be made if the event were to be reproduced. Evaluate if the event as a whole accomplished the purpose and goals established at the beginning of the process as well as how each component of the event and its production contributed to the purpose and goals.
