Repurposing Adversity: Using Lessons From Trauma’s Adversity As Tools For Juvenile Justice Reform

Despite the increased attention and focus throughout the years of looking for more effective ways of dealing with youthful offenders, America is still one of the most punitive countries regarding juvenile crime – averaging nearly 60,000 incarcerated youth daily. In recent years, there has been a trend toward reforming the juvenile justice system to prioritize rehabilitation over exclusion and punishment, with a preference for restorative approaches and strategies instead of traditional exclusionary and punitive responses. However, continued high incarceration rates combined with almost 90 percent recidivism rates suggest these approaches are ineffective and lack the necessary elements to address the underlying causes of juvenile crime or help position our youth for successful reentry or participation in society. As we learn more about adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and the devastating long-term effects on a child’s development, we recognize a connection between ACEs, toxic stress, and juvenile crime. ACEs refer to adverse or traumatic events that occur during childhood, such as physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, neglect, or household dysfunction. These experiences can pose significant risks to children’s physical and mental health. Toxic stress refers to the chronic exposure to the body’s stress response systems reacting to severe and prolonged adversity, such as child abuse or neglect. Developmental changes in the body and brain due to toxic stress can increase the risk of physical and mental health problems, including anxiety, depression, and substance abuse, and lead to increased negative behaviors and criminal activity. This paper argues that a trauma-informed approach to reform juvenile justice is needed to help survivors of ACEs and toxic stress repurpose their adversity into a tool of opportunity and empowerment. This trauma-informed approach will, in turn, help trauma survivors find purpose in life, alter their perspective of their world, and perform actions and behaviors in service of their goals. Only by including an individualized trauma-informed approach will we finally realize collective juvenile justice reform.

Rumination has been identified as a transdiagnostic risk factor associated with several internalizing disorders such as depression, anxiety, and comorbidities of the two (McLaughlin & Nolen-Hoeksema, 2011; Nolen-Hoeksema et al., 2008). Further, indicators of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis (i.e., flatter diurnal cortisol slopes [DCS] and greater cortisol awakening responses [CAR]) are associated with greater risk of internalizing disorders and chronic stress (Adam et al., 2010; Adam et al., 2017). Notably, no studies have examined the association between rumination and the diurnal cortisol slope in Latino populations, and literature on the relation of rumination and the CAR is mixed (Cropley et al., 2015; Hilt et al., 2017; Zoccola et al., 2011). Leveraging self-reported rumination as well as gold-standard salivary cortisol collection procedures (Stalder et al., 2016), the current study sought to elucidate associations between daily rumination and diurnal cortisol in an adolescent Latino sample by examining gender differences and bicultural competence as potential moderators of this association. Results indicated a significant but small association between night-before rumination on problems/stress and next-day DCS. Further, gender differences were detected in the effects of same-day rumination and the CAR. Greater rumination on feelings was associated with a smaller CAR the same day in males, while greater rumination on problems/stress was linked with a greater CAR the same day in females. In addition, there were no buffering effects of bicultural competence. Findings inform future research regarding potential bidirectional relations of daily rumination and the CAR, as well was how different kinds of daily rumination may have differing associations with the CAR of males and females.

Water markets are a promising method for adapting to water scarcity in the western United States, and the Colorado-Big Thompson Project (CBT) market is often held up as a prime example of their potential. While much has been written about the CBT market, the current academic literature tends to eschew structural modeling of supply and demand in favor of fitting hedonic price equations, which ignore many of the market’s unique characteristics. This paper proposes a model of supply and demand for CBT water which accounts for these unique features, including transaction supply, municipality stockpiling, and differences in behavior across different types of water users. The estimation of this model is made possible by novel administrative records data on both transfers and ownership of CBT water, the processing and features of which are described in detail. While the voluminous and messy nature of the data has prevented complete estimation of the model at this point, some preliminary results are presented along with a plan for future work.

Redox homeostasis is described as the net physiologic balance between inter-convertible oxidized and reduced equivalents within subcellular compartments that remain in a dynamic equilibrium. This equilibrium is impacted by reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are natural by-products of normal cellular activity. Studies have shown that cancer cells have high ROS levels and altered redox homeostasis due to increased basal metabolic activity, mitochondrial dysfunction, peroxisome activity, as well as the enhanced activity of NADPH oxidase, cyclooxygenases, and lipoxygenases. Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most prevalent primary brain tumor in adults with a median survival of 15 months. GBM is characterized by its extreme resistance to therapeutic interventions as well as an elevated metabolic rate that results in the exacerbated production of ROS. Therefore, many agents with either antioxidant or pro-oxidant mechanisms of action have been rigorously employed in preclinical as well as clinical settings for treating GBM by inducing oxidative stress within the tumor. Among those agents are well-known antioxidant vitamin C and small molecular weight SOD mimic BMX-001, both of which are presently in clinical trials on GBM patients. Despite the wealth of investigations, limited data is available on the response of normal brain vs glioblastoma tissue to these therapeutic interventions. Currently, a sensitive and rapid liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method was established for the quantification of a panel of oxidative stress biomarkers: glutathione (GSH), cysteine (Cys), glutathione disulfide (GSSG), and cysteine disulfide in human-derived brain tumor and mouse brain samples; this method will be enriched with additional oxidative stress biomarkers homocysteine (Hcy), methionine (Met), and cystathionine (Cyst). Using this enriched method, we propose to evaluate the thiol homeostasis and the redox state of both normal brain and GBM in mice after exposure with redox-active therapeutics. Our results showed that, compared to normal brain (in intact mice), GBM tissue has significantly lower GSH/GSSG and Cys/CySS ratios indicating much higher oxidative stress levels. Contralateral “normal” brain tissue collected from the mice with intracranial GBM were also under significant oxidative stress compared to normal brains collected from the intact mice. Importantly, normal brain tissue in both studies retained the ability to restore redox homeostasis after treatment with a redox-active therapeutic within 24 hours while glioblastoma tissue does not. Ultimately, elucidating the differential redox response of normal vs tumor tissue will allow for the development of more redox-active agents with therapeutic benefit.
