The ground for the ethics of lockdown policies has radically shifted in the past three years. Libertarians started to be convinced that it is morally justifiable to impose constraints on liberties, including forced quarantine and social isolation. On September 7, according to the World Health Orignaztion, the mortality rate for COVID reached its lowest since March 9, 2020. I will take September 7 as the turning point for the ethics of the pandemic in this work. If we accept utilitarianism, deontology, or moral relativism, then, prior to the turning point, China’s Zero-COVID Policy was morally justified. Although China’s Zero-COVID Policy has remained controversial, I will propose that (1) the policy was justified on utilitarianism because it maximized utility, (2) the policy was justified on deontology because the policy is the Nash Equilibrium, and (3) the policy was justified on moral relativism because the policy was in accordance with the norms of the Chinese people.

The self-assembly of strongly-coupled nanocrystal superlattices, as a convenient bottom-up synthesis technique featuring a wide parameter space, is at the forefront of next-generation material design. To realize the full potential of such tunable, functional materials, a more complete understanding of the self-assembly process and the artificial crystals it produces is required. In this work, we discuss the results of a hard coherent X-ray scattering experiment at the Linac Coherent Light Source, observing superlattices long after their initial nucleation. The resulting scattering intensity correlation functions have dispersion suggestive of a disordered crystalline structure and indicate the occurrence of rapid, strain-relieving events therein. We also present real space reconstructions of individual superlattices obtained via coherent diffractive imaging. Through this analysis we thus obtain high-resolution structural and dynamical information of self-assembled superlattices in their native liquid environment.

In the Spring Semester of 2022, I embarked on an experience that would change my life forever: a study abroad trip to St. Petersburg, Russia, right before the Russian invasion of Ukraine. To honor such a unique story, I have decided to incorporate it into my Barrett Honors Thesis, which will analyze Russian public opinions on the War in Ukraine and situate them to my own personal encounters of Russian reactions to the invasion, alongside telling my own story. My final assignment for Barrett will cover both the perilous and the peculiar, as I describe my observations and interactions with the city and its inhabitants. My goal is to create a piece of long-form journalism that compares the perceptions I had in the former Union of Soviet Social Republics with the research findings of numerous news sources, in an attempt to illustrate the true political climate in Russia today.

This research study examined a change of direction task within collegiate lacrosse players by using a 5-10-5 agility drill to determine if the presence or absence of the lacrosse stick (crosse) affected change of direction ability. A literature review assessed the angle-velocity tradeoff, optimal ways to perform a change of direction, and additional factors that can influence change of direction performance. 10 male participants performed 10 total trials, 5 with their stick and 5 without and timing and leg angles were measured. There were no major differences between the two conditions except for the leg angle for turn 2, as a correlation stating an increase in leg angle results in an increase in turn time was found. A case study on one of the participants was performed, which aligned with the correlation between turn 2 time and turn 2 leg angle. Overall execution of the change of direction did not align with the optimal techniques found in the literature response. Momentum leading into each turn is an influencing factor in turn time and overall time and may be the reason for the correlation between turn 2 leg angle and time.

In this project, I aim to provide a comprehensive account of the acceptability and utilization of capital punishment through the lens of retributivist and consequentialist ethical theory. After determining the moral justification for the use of the death penalty, I conclude that there is not enough theoretical ground to claim that capital punishment is ethical or morally justifiable on the basis of theory alone. It is necessary to account for the practical, empirical evidence when making policy decisions, rather than basing them on theory alone. I propose various alternative methods of reaching collective unity and establishing justice in the form of restoration and rehabilitation.

Discussions of the nature of time can be enriched using insight from the field of biology. In the evolution of our species, biological timekeeping mechanisms have been honed to a fine point and can accurately adhere to a 24-hour cycle. When considering that these timekeeping mechanisms would only have evolved if they were reasonably accurate, it must be the case that our timekeeping systems are measuring a genuine feature of reality. This thesis explores this idea by discussing the veridicality of the circadian clock and contrasting it with the physiological origin of feelings of duration. As it turns out, duration can not be accounted for by the circadian clock, implying that the felt ‘flow’ of time is a cognitive illusion rather than a feature of objective reality. Given this, our knowledge of biology reconciles best with the Static View (B-theory) of time.

This thesis examines the history of abortion law in Italy and the current status of abortion access, finding that ambiguities in legal wording significantly contribute to the current inaccessibility of abortion throughout the country. Lack of clarity regarding conscientious objection has lead to widespread rates of objection across Italy, limiting women's ability to find providers willing to perform the service. In addition, because the law does not expressly state what procedures are included under conscientious objection, women may be denied pre- or post-abortion care and face difficulties finding treatment for miscarriages. Finally, I explore potential avenues to ameliorate the current status of abortion access in Italy.

History is written by the winners. The losers’ narrative ends with the downfall of their civilization. Right now, the winners writing and teaching American history are setting up the next generation for failure. Instead of honing in on the structural landmarks that made the United States a shining city upon a hill, as most victors that would look to perpetuate prosperity would do, many institutions of higher education in charge of teaching our history imbue shame and skepticism of our past into our curriculum. By focusing on the atrocities of American history from an out-of-context modern perspective, we are teaching our young adults that monumental institutions deserve to be torn down, not venerated or improved for modern times. In my research for the Center for American Institutions, I have discovered that the winners that have captured academia and American history subscribe to corrosive tenets rooted in postmodernism and subjective victimhood. Postmodern American historians believe objective truth and knowledge collected over the centuries should be held in radical skepticism because of its origins in a society formed in oppressive systems of hierarchies. After discarding much of our history because progress did not happen fast enough, contemporary American historians believe in constructing a culture that emphasizes an equitable, multiracial democracy rooted in intersectionality, an ideology which has its proponents looking to align itself on vertices of identity—both real and perceived— in search for victimhood and offense. After examining syllabi that displayed this ideology in an empirical study, I examine evidence of this ideology worming itself into history, before spilling off college campuses and into our daily lives. Amplified by social media algorithms, extremist factions on both sides of the political spectrum have been empowered by our academic institutions to abandon the pursuit of truth and our history to construct the culture as they see fit. The casualties in this war over history and culture are too numerous to count, but perhaps the most the most costly one is the Generation Z. By teaching a history that shames instead of empowers, our newest generation enters the political fray unprepared for reasonable civil discourse, interprets such discussions as personal attacks, and feeds the polarized dichotomy destroying our political culture. Beyond our politics, the teaching of history—along with factors like the decline of freedom to play and a concerted focus to aim children towards higher education among others— has resulted in a generation of fragile, anxious, and unprepared individuals that stand ready to be hoodwinked by life, instead of embracing it. My thesis seeks to not only present these problems to you, but to present a model of a solution, a way to tell our history from a winning perspective. My model syllabus strengthens debate, encourages participation in our discourse, and strives to equip students with the tools they need to thrive in America’s vibrant civic culture. America is a winning country and idea, one which deserves to be perpetuated for as long as possible: we should teach our young people to embody this idea and succeed rather than confuse them with a pessimistic portrayal.
