This Thesis Project was completed to gain experience in how to create a viable business concept pitch as part of the start-up venture process. During the course of the project the company name–“Vibes Clothing”–and business proposition–“To provide fashion-minded athletic individuals with stylish, versatile, and fully functional luminescent clothing.”–were conceived. However, to further develop the company idea into a viable business concept, market analysis, and customer research were conducted. The identified market conditions and customer desires were then utilized to refine Vibes Clothing's logo, brand, and product. These business and design considerations were then strategically implemented in a men’s-model luminescent clothing prototype. As a further part of ‘the creation of a business concept pitch’–typical of one given at a pitch competition or to a group of investors–a business executive summary and funding pitch presentation were also created. Ultimately, this Thesis Project successfully culminated as a formal business concept pitch; wherein a functional display prototype, business executive summary, and funding pitch presentation were all developed.

Cornhole, traditionally seen as tailgate entertainment, has rapidly risen in popularity since the launching of the American Cornhole League in 2016. However, it lacks robust quality control over large tournaments, since many of the matches are scored and refereed by the players themselves. In the past, there have been issues where entire competition brackets have had to be scrapped and replayed because scores were not handled correctly. The sport is in need of a supplementary scoring solution that can provide quality control and accuracy over large matches where there aren’t enough referees present to score games. Drawing from the ACL regulations as well as personal experience and testimony from ACL Pro players, a list of requirements was generated for a potential automatic scoring system. Then, a market analysis of existing scoring solutions was done, and it found that there are no solutions on the market that can automatically score a cornhole game. Using the problem requirements and previous attempts to solve the scoring problem, a list of concepts was generated and evaluated against each other to determine which scoring system design should be developed. After determining that the chosen concept was the best way to approach the problem, the problem requirements and cornhole rules were further refined into a set of physical assumptions and constraints about the game itself. This informed the choice, structure, and implementation of the algorithms that score the bags. The prototype concept was tested on their own, and areas of improvement were found. Lastly, based on the results of the tests and what was learned from the engineering process, a roadmap was set out for the future development of the automatic scoring system into a full, market-ready product.

Data Sourcing and Mini-grid Design for Electricity-Poor Communities Across Fiji

There are approximately 300 unelectrified villages in Fiji. These villages are scattered across the many islands of Fiji and lack a connection to the main electrical grid, which is only available on the islands of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Mini-grids and solar home systems are effective options for rural electrification that cannot be reached through grid extension. This work completes data acquisition, modeling, and technical and financial analysis to design mini-grid systems for remote communities. These designs are compared and tested against generation outages, storm simulations and carbon emission reduction. Having backup diesel generators provides an easy solution to the issue of resiliency during storms or expected maintenance though creates more emissions than solar-only or hybrid counterparts. Systems with net zero carbon emissions are also considered to be realistic options if these align closer to project goals and are seen to be reliable for up to a week with limited solar irradiance. An assessment was also completed of components locally available to build the systems.

The aging population has become a pressing social issue, as the younger generation is busy with work and financial stability, leaving little time to care for the elderly. Technological advances in smart homes provide an opportunity for the elderly to live more comfortably and conveniently in their own homes. In this study, we conducted research on the definition of a smart home, the existing usage of the pressure sensor, the classification of the pressure sensor, and its working theory. We are curious about if a consumer-grade barometric sensor is sensitive enough in the home environment. Then, we set up the testing equipment with a consumer-grade barometric pressure sensor, an Adalogger FeatherWing, and an Arduino board. After programming the Arduino, we collected the data from the BME680 sensor in different states (open or closed) of the door, and then analyzed and visualized it using MATLAB. Furthermore, we also explored some potential scenarios and applications for the BME680 sensor. With the help of the BME680 sensor, smart home technology has the potential to improve the lives of older adults and ease the burden on younger generations.

Motorcycles must be designed for safety and long operation. Front suspension systems must in turn be safe and able to operate for long service lives. Challenges to achieving safe and long service lifetimes include designing components (rims, axles, forks, etc.) to withstand various loading conditions not just once but numerous times as a matter of fatigue life. An already developed CAD model of a motorcycle suspension was taken and optimized for various loading conditions. These conditions included static loading, braking, cornering, and wheelie and front impact loads. In all cases, front impact load was the critical loading condition when FEA in SolidWorks Simulation was conducted for the components. All components were then optimized to handle the impact load by changing geometry until safety factors of 4.0 ± 0.25 were achieved. Components were then analyzed for fatigue life, with all steel and magnesium components having infinite predicted fatigue lives and all aluminum components having fatigue lives predicted with corrected S-N curves created for up to 500 million loading cycles. The design was optimized with all components becoming improved for stress compliance, with room for improvement existing in both defining loads for analysis and developing more accurate and rigorous fatigue life models.
