The Founders lab is a year-long program that gives its students an opportunity to participate in a unique team-based, experiential Barrett honors thesis project to design and apply marketing and sales strategies, as well as business and financial models to create and launch a new business. Initially, our team focused on creating a product that would provide those who have received basic genetic testing from services such as 23andMe with nutrition, exercise, and health/wellness educational resources. Over time, we transitioned our focus to creating a community forum that would also provide those resources to people who had not received basic genetic testing, but were still interested in accessing educational resources about the specific conditions that basic genetic testing services provide reports for. To accomplish this, we have produced a website that allows users to post content and interact with each other.

In arid environments such as Arizona, agricultural producers are burdened by constraints placed on them by inhospitable weather and limited access to water and fertile soil when attempting to grow produce. Farms in the arid Southwest often have to build greenhouses to overcome such constraints; however, such greenhouses may be relatively space, water, and pesticide intensive and often have demanding maintenance needs and overhead costs. In addition, many current agricultural practices exhaust land resources disparagingly, leading to irreversible environmental degradation. In an effort to improve agricultural production for those limited by weather and resource constraints while simultaneously increasing sustainability in land, resource and pesticide use, we have created Valleyponics, a hydroponic growth services company centered around creating a minimal farming footprint. The company uses a consultative services approach, leveraging NASA Veggie Growth System Technology to provide solutions to large businesses by automating their agricultural production processes and minimizing resource use year-round. Valleyponics aims to cultivate consultative partnerships which will allow our clients, their communities, and the environment to flourish.

Secure Point Location Services believes that this area is a prime location to begin the development and sale of our real-time location tracking system to be licensed by NASA technologies. Over the last 9 months, Secure Point has made steps to identify a target market, reach out to potential partners, develop a website, create a marketing strategy, and generate traction with the help of the Founder’s Lab at Arizona State University as well as the highly-experienced business catalysts who have provided guidance along the way. The following report will go into detail to cover our entrepreneurial journey to validate an idea and generate traction.

Party on Wall Street is a web-based video game developed by Maroon and Gold Game Studios. As an educational entrepreneurship video game, Party on Wall Street provides a refreshing and exciting new experience for the tycoons in society who want a little more of that entrepreneurial lifestyle. With proper research on customer demographics, Maroon and Gold Game Studio’s brand identity consists of a modern game with multiple use cases. With strong partnerships with multiple creatives and built from scratch game development, Party on Wall Street implements a fun, high intensity business competitive environment for players and students to engage in. This thesis consists of building an interactive experience through the use of AirConsole, a third party platform that hosts the game and allows players to join it by connecting to the same website on their mobile device. The primary user has access to hosting a game which can be casted to a larger screen, typically a television. When hosting a game, a room code is generated which can be typed in on the mobile device to connect to the game. When all players have joined the game, the host can initiate it. Players go through 6 rounds of pitch style investing presentations and have the opportunity to invest in other products with the ultimate goal of earning the most money. In the end, the game was successfully implemented, extensively user tested, and is under review by the AirConsole game team. Over the last year, the team successfully brought an idea through the entire product development process, learned to build a game in Unity, made practice of extensible testing and validation methods, and leveraged customer research and feedback to design a game that is ultimately both enjoyable and educational.

This project analyzes aspects of ESports and gaming in relation to college/university students and college/university campuses. The specific focus of the project was establishing that there was an interest in additional Esports and gaming engagement on campus and then determining what manner of engagement was most desired by students. In order to discover the most popular form of Esports and gaming engagement for students, we held two events: a recreational ESports Competition and tutorials to teach students how to mod video games. After carrying out these events we established that an Esports Competition was a more popular form of engagement. However, we also established that both forms of engagement would be successful with proper marketing and execution.

Our group examined the low rate of clothing utilization in the fashion industry. Fast fashion has contributed to this low rate of utilization, as well as the high amounts of textiles that end up in landfills. Our startup, Patchwork Apparel, was designed to address this problem. Our clothes were made with fabric scraps or donated textiles that would otherwise end up in landfills. The mission of our business was to develop trendy and sustainable apparel that helped to eliminate textile waste while staying on brand with current fashion trends.
