The poor spectral and temporal resolution of cochlear implants (CIs) limit their users’ music enjoyment. Remixing music by boosting vocals while attenuating spectrally complex instruments has been shown to benefit music enjoyment of postlingually deaf CI users. However, the effectiveness of music remixing in prelingually deaf CI users is still unknown. This study compared the music-remixing preferences of nine postlingually deaf, late-implanted CI users and seven prelingually deaf, early-implanted CI users, as well as their ratings of song familiarity and vocal pleasantness. Twelve songs were selected from the most streamed tracks on Spotify for testing. There were six remixed versions of each song: Original, Music-6 (6-dB attenuation of all instruments), Music-12 (12-dB attenuation of all instruments), Music-3-3-12 (3-dB attenuation of bass and drums and 12-dB attenuation of other instruments), Vocals-6 (6-dB attenuation of vocals), and Vocals-12 (12-dB attenuation of vocals). It was found that the prelingual group preferred the Music-6 and Original versions over the other versions, while the postlingual group preferred the Vocals-12 version over the Music-12 version. The prelingual group was more familiar with the songs than the postlingual group. However, the song familiarity rating did not significantly affect the patterns of preference ratings in each group. The prelingual group also had higher vocal pleasantness ratings than the postlingual group. For the prelingual group, higher vocal pleasantness led to higher preference ratings for the Music-12 version. For the postlingual group, their overall preference for the Vocals-12 version was driven by their preference ratings for songs with very unpleasant vocals. These results suggest that the patient factor of auditory experience and stimulus factor of vocal pleasantness may affect the music-remixing preferences of CI users. As such, the music-remixing strategy needs to be customized for individual patients and songs.

The relationship between sleep and physical activity is an area of growing scientific interest, particularly in the context of older adults. The importance of examining long sleep duration and its influence on physical activity in this demographic becomes increasingly relevant given rising healthcare costs. This dissertation aims to investigate this intricate relationship via secondary analysis by examining the effects of moderate time-in-bed (TIB) restriction (60 minutes per night)) on various intensities of physical activity (sedentary, light, moderate, vigorous, moderate-vigorous physical activity) in older adults classified as long sleepers and average duration sleepers. It was hypothesized that moderate TIB restriction would result in differential changes in physical activity levels across various intensities, with long sleepers exhibiting increased physical activity and average sleepers displaying decreased activity, potentially influenced by alterations in TST (total sleep time) and SE (sleep efficiency). Utilizing a randomized controlled trial design, this study examined the effect of treatment changes in objectively measures activity (waist actigraphy) and subjects physical activity levels as measured by the Godin Leisure-Time Exercise Questionnaire . Eligible participants were long sleepers (sleeping > 9 hours per night) and average sleepers (sleeping 7-9 hours per night). Both types of sleepers were either randomized to TIB restriction or asked to maintain their average sleep patterns. Mean TIB restriction compared with baseline was 39.5 minutes in average sleepers and 52.9 minutes in long sleepers randomized to TIB restriction . Contrary to the original hypothesis, no significant effect of TIB restriction was observed across all physical activity levels in either long sleepers or average sleepers. However, a notable association was found between increased sleep efficiency (+0.09% [SD = ± 4.64%]) and light physical activity (±31 minutes [SD = ± 104.81, R=0.445, P < 0.007]) in long sleepers undergoing TIB restriction. While this study presents several methodological limitations, including its nature as a secondary analysis and the less-than-intended achievement of TIB restriction, it adds a valuable layer to the existing body of research on sleep and physical activity in older adults. The findings suggest that moderate TIB restriction may not be sufficiently impactful to change behavior in physical activity levels, thus highlighting the need for more nuanced, targeted research in this domain.

Research has shown the benefits of exercise on people with (DS), and how it affects their quality of life (Maïano et al. 2019). However, many studies have also shown that the majority of people with DS do not meet the national minimum requirements for physical activity per day (Phillips et al. 2011). The current study will focus on Pediatric Assisted Cycle Therapy (PACT) as exercise and specifically its effects on children with DS. The goal is to improve the general behavioral skills of children with DS, which in turn can improve their quality of life. We predict that, based on pilot data (Gomez, 2015; Parker, 2016), GLTEQ will increase their total activity score following 8 weeks of PACT in young children with DS. The Godin Leisure Time Exercise Questionnaire was used to measure the participants’ participation levels in leisure time activity. Participants were involved in an 8-week intervention, in which they biked (PACT) for 30 minutes, twice a week. GLETQ was measured pre and post intervention and assessed using the scale provided by the GLETQ. The data from this study has shown a positive correlation between Leisure Time Activity and PACT. Overall, a mean increase in raw activity score in the GLETQ was shown.

The purpose of this study was to examine the validity of a modified Assisted Cycling Therapy bicycle for improving depression in children with Down Syndrome (DS). Seven participants completed 2x/week for 8 weeks, 30 minutes at a time of ACT, in which participants’ voluntary pedaling rates were augmented via the bicycle motor, ensuring that they were pedaling at a rate greater than their self-paced rate. Depression was measured using a modified version of the Children’s Depressive Inventory, called the CDI-2. Our study demonstrated that the scores from the CDI-2 decreased, demonstrating less depressive symptomatology after the conclusion of the 8 week intervention. Our results were interpreted via our model of the mechanisms involved in influencing the success of ACT. Future research would include a greater sample size, a more relevant measure of depressive scores, and a consistent data collection environment. However our initial pilot study showed promising results for improving mental health in children with DS.

In this thesis, the relationship between digital and clinical motor tests will be examined. These tests will be performed on adults of older age (~66 years). Most participants are those who are concerned about developing, or already have, a neurodegenerative disease such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. The digital test that is given and evaluated is Neurotrax. Clinical motor tasks being administered include the Purdue Pegboard, Box & Blocks, Grip Strength, and Pincer Grip. Correlations between motor skills from NeuoTrax and each clinical task were calculated and analyzed. Statistical analysis of this data was done with Excel Data Analysis Toolpak. Means and standard errors were also calculated. Results indicated that Pincer Grip Strength (N) and Color Trails (%) had strong correlations with NeuroTrax Motor Skills, with correlation coefficients of 0.562 and -0.510, respectively. These associations between the NeuroTrax Motor skills assessment and clinical motor tasks may suggest that executive function and grip strength are mostly represented as motor skill domain in digital tests. Future work should examine other motor domains such as dexterity, variability, timing, and muscular efficiency aspects of digital motor assessments.

The primary goal of this study is to assess and develop an understanding of the effects of Assisted Cycling Therapy on manual motor performance in children with Down syndrome. Seven children (Mage 11.6 years old) completed a 30-minute cycle session 2x/week for 8 weeks on the PACT bicycle at a 35% greater rate than their self-selected rate. Pre- and post-testing of grip force with a dynamometer and unimanual and bimanual manual dexterity using the Purdue Pegboard were measured to determine changes in force production and fine motor control, respectively. Results consistently showed improvements in grip force in both hands and bimanual dexterity following PACT. My results are interpreted with respect to cerebral lateralization and neuroplasticity following PACT intervention.
