At the University Technology Office – Polytechnic (UTOP), there is no way for managers to efficiently schedule their student workers’ shifts. It is not only difficult to acquire their availability, but also to adjust and schedule time off. The primary goal of this project was to create a software application, or Bot, that allows Slack, the main communication platform at UTOP, to communicate with Google Calendar, the primary scheduling tool for student workers. This results in managers and student workers being able to manage their work schedules more effectively, which catalyzes department productivity and staff availability.

Information technology has become an increasing popular major offered by various universities, and provides the student with notable flexibility regarding courses as there are multiple career paths to suit the person’s specific technical interests. However, the methods universities use to promote their majors, including IT, are not as effective as it needs to be. The mediums currently used are mostly comprised of brochures, flyers, a single web page from the university’s entire website, and some communication with advisors, among others. This can be an issue for many readers as the information is often brief, providing only summaries of what can be expected, and ambiguous statistics that may not accurately or completely reflect the prospects of graduates looking to make a living the rest of their adult lives. This could cause some students to choose a major that may not be their best fit, and changing majors later will be very costly and delay graduation by one or more years. Therefore, the advocation of majors will have be rethought. The IT major offered at ASU is a perfect opportunity to determine whether a major can be promoted through a different approach with a senior capstone project involving a website. This Barrett creative project will act as a subset of the capstone project that will explore an attempt at introducing in interactive element to the website that allows prospective students to get a brief introduction to the computer networking aspect of IT, which includes a real world introductory game, along with more detailed exercises if the user is interested.

Businesses stand to face many uncertainties from the moment they start up to every moment in between. A business can try to recognize them and plan ahead, react to them as they occur, or be rocked by a black swan they never saw coming. How a business deals with unforeseen events can increase its potential for success or failure. With this in mind, there is no better bridge between the here and now and the future than planning for change in order to move a company toward preparing for change, adapting to change and achieving optimal results. Interested in taking a step toward the digital age, Alpha Homes Management, Inc. (Alpha Homes) sought our help to explore ideas and options to take their company to a new level. This Barrett Creative Project was centered on designing a system for Alpha Homes that will replace their outdated paper-based system with a more digital one. This aligns with the project also featured as a capstone project as required by the information technology degree expectations. In supplement to the capstone, and for the Barrett Creative Project, the final product was presented to the owners of Alpha Homes Management, Inc. to be utilized by the business. The end goal is to provide a platform which provides a paperless environment for documentation and bring the company a step closer to having a robust internet presence. Now that the web-based application product has been created and presented, the testing phase can now begin to evaluate its efficacy.
