Tiger Woods’ adultery scandal was one of the most widely covered sports stories of the 2000s, in part because of how famous he was as a person and athlete. But the scandal and Tiger’s handling of it provided public relations professionals one of the most relevant crisis communications case studies in the history of sports. This case study is split into three sections; pre-scandal, the scandal itself and then his road to recovery. The case study is accompanied by an essay analyzing Woods’ crisis communications and image restoration strategies.

The purpose of this experiment was to determine if there was a statistically significant relationship between the success rate of Assisted Reproductive Technology treatments and factors including the socioeconomic status of the area around selected fertility clinics as well as whether the eggs used in the treatments were fresh or frozen, and either from donors or from the patients themselves. Data on treatment success rates were gathered from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and socioeconomic status data in the form of median income and racial makeup of the area surrounding selected clinics were gathered from the national Census. These data were analyzed using a general linear model to determine whether any of the potential effects had a significant impact on success rates. A binomial logit link analysis of the results showed that only the fresh versus frozen nature of the egg used in each procedure had a significant impact on the success rate of that procedure, and that the socioeconomic status of the area around the clinics seemed to have no effect on treatment success rates. The value of this analysis in particular comes from its attention to the relationship between socioeconomic factors and the success rates of fertility specifically, as much of the existing research on the relationship between socioeconomic factors and quality of care tends to focus on medical care in general, as opposed to any one area.

American Nurses at War: From the Veil of Domesticity to Military Service

During the First and Second World Wars, the totality of global war and the involvement of the United States necessitated the use of American women within military medical services as nurses. Military nursing served as a catalyst for professionalizing nursing as well as the entrance women into US military jobs. This thesis explores American women’s military nursing roles during WWI and WWII within the historical context of the precedence set for female nurses’ involvement in wartime medical service in both the American Civil War and the Spanish Civil War. In so doing, it seeks to answer specific research questions focused on nurse’s wartime experiences, the formality of their role, and public perceptions of female nurses. I will examine the change over time of these issues and reasons for their evolution.

How a Basic Income impacts labor outcomes: A primer on Universal Basic Income

Economists, policy-makers, and various intellectuals have consistently debated the strongest way to support citizens. Lately, however, the simplest idea has managed to gain an unbelievable amount of traction. Maybe, rather than a complex policy solution targeted towards to certain demographics and with various work requirements we should simply give people money. The beauty of the idea is in its simplicity – and it is a key reason for its growing popularity. Universal Basic Income (UBI) is a policy proposal that has been steadily gaining momentum throughout the United States and across the world. Recently, it has been viewed as a stimulus to the economy in the wake of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic as well as a solution to labor-displacing technological advancements. Additionally, many economists, politicians, and various thought-leaders have portrayed basic income as a one-stop solution to many challenges facing the world. The idea behind UBI comes down to this idea – basic income will not solve all your problems – it makes your problems easier to solve. Many UBI advocates use that phrase to argue in favor for a basic income, but it is important to ensure that it doesn’t add to most people’s problems by discouraging work and encouraging seemingly unhealthy habits.

Air travel has become increasingly popular, becoming the preferred and most efficient method of travel throughout the years. With air travel projected to double within the next 20 years, more people than ever will be utilizing this form of travel. However, an increased demand requires an equivalent increase of security and safety. Many individuals have pondered this concept in an effort to better understand the corrective action in store following two deadly crashes that killed over 300 people. Are the airlines and aerospace manufacturers able to ensure a specific safety standard across all aircraft models and is this enough to reassure the public? Boeing, one of the industry’s leaders in aerospace manufacturing, found itself at the forefront of this movement for safety after the tragic system failures of its aircraft, the Boeing 737 MAX 8.
This report has been curated in an effort to highlight the injustices and oversights that have occurred throughout the course of the Boeing Crisis. These have formed during the early stages of designing, manufacturing, and integration process of the Boeing 737 MAX 8. The coverage and investigation that this crisis received was not cumulative of all factors that contributed to the failure of the aircraft to perform as designed while in flight. With many official reports from Boeing and the FAA being insufficient in both scope and detail of the crashes, this report will highlight the integral details that should play a larger role in the future manufacturing processes of aircrafts.

Attending a university is a stressful transition for many students leaving their respective support systems. Many universities attempt to mitigate this stress by offering numerous campus resources such as, tutoring services, counseling services, and health services. However, research has shown that many of these resources are under utilized by the general student population because of barriers that include student perception, awareness, and access. Being able to understand these barriers that lead to the under utilization of campus resources can assist with creating resources that are more visible, engaging, and attractive to student populations on many campuses. The question being asked is: how to create an engaging health resource that is attractive, visible, and accessible to students?

Based on research analyzed on the barriers between students and campus resources, the optimization of student outreach, and marketing strategies directed towards students, the creation of a student-led campus health resource followed. Analysis of this research showcased that the medium in which students resources were promoted, and the framework of the resource have an impact on students' awareness of the resource, attractiveness of the student resource, and student resource engagement. Based on these analyses and results, the creation of HealthU occurred to provide a visible, engaging, and attractive student resource to the Arizona State University student body.

This honors thesis aims to outline and present a business plan for a start-up. Working with the Founders Lab, as part of the W. P. Carey Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, three students identified an issue in their community and brainstormed an idea to form a solution. The problem identified was in the textile industry where fabric waste created as a byproduct of production, harms the environment as it ends up in landfills, instead of being recycled. In an effort to create a circular economy, the start-up, Circular Comfort, came into fruition. The mission of this business is to reduce waste by repurposing fabric scraps into products that can be marketed and sold. The first product was created, a beach bag, out of fabric scraps gathered from a fashion incubator. The following will outline the formation of the start-up including research, business plan, market strategy, and the overall journey. By working with a thesis director, the team was able to prepare this pitch deck in hopes to combat an ongoing problem in our community.

Engaging Organization Members Through Tailored Sustainable Competitions

As ASU students, we saw that our peers had opinions regarding sustainable issues, but did not feel like their voices were being heard by the university. We saw a space we could fill to promote engagement and let students know that they could participate in finding sustainable solutions to problems they faced around campus. This created our venture which works to promote engagement through sustainable solutions. We ran a successful competition with students and local professionals by focusing on sustainability topics students were interested in. Promoting engagement can often come across as disingenuous and thus serve the opposite effect of its function. By centering around the topic of tailored sustainability related competitions, we can direct goodwill to the organizations by harnessing the positive feelings individuals have toward sustainability topics.

Supply Chain Alternative Thesis: A Strategic Analysis of COVID-19’s Impact on Small Business Operations and Supply Chain Processes with a Focus on SilverTree Dentistry

My journey through Arizona State University did not start with Supply Chain Management. I began as a Finance Major, but something did not resonate with me. I eventually switched my major to Supply Chain Management in my Junior year, after taking Professor Eddie Davila’s SCM 300 course. The hands-on nature of supply chain management, as well as the broad range of industries it covered, got me hooked. For my alternative thesis, I had to attend four seminars for WPC supply faculty, then write summaries on them. I would then choose one of the four to further extrapolate on and do independent research. However, after attending only two, the COVID-19 outbreak occurred, leading to the cancellation of the remaining seminars. As a result, I was faced with two choices; abandon the thesis project entirely, or work with what I had. With the approval of my director, I decided on the following outline. The first part of this paper will summarize and reflect on the two faculty lectures I was able to attend. The second part of the paper will look at the way COVID-19 has impacted the supply chain of a local business, SilverTree Dentistry. I will use information gathered from the dental office, supplier sites, and online sources as well as from the two faculty lectures to develop a cohesive plan of potential action for SilverTree to better equip themselves and their supply chain to handle the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as how to respond as a small business in future times of crisis. This paper’s focus is on how small business supply chains are disrupted in their areas of supplier selection and supplier power, specifically how those areas affect the business’s spend.
