In this creative project, I explore the effects of Founder's Syndrome and use my own experience as a co-founder of a student organization to determine effective practices for ensuring the sustainability of the organization. I conducted a literature review of other sources related to Founder's Syndrome and used their results to guide my decisions, and then later reviewed the effectiveness of those practices. For the final product, I created a website that can be passed down among future generations of leaders with important information regarding the organization and operations. I presented this website, as well as my research and findings in a presentation for my defense.

This paper examines the effects of childhood maltreatment on attachment and development. Humans are social beings; connection is at the core of human behavior. This social nature is what drives the need to form relationships with others. Relationships help humans learn and understand the social world around them relatively safely and securely. However, to ensure that these relationships bring safety and security, the ability to do so must be established during the first 18 months of children’s lives (Kennedy & Kennedy, 2004). The relationships humans form are based on how they establish attachments, or emotional and long-term bonds and relationships, to a primary caregiver or parent as children (Bowlby, 1969). These primary attachments include secure, anxious-preoccupied, insecure-avoidant, or fearful-avoidant attachments and can have significant effects on individuals or emerging adults in early adulthood (ages 18-25). Primary attachments act as a safe and organized view of how human interactions and relationships work and act as a secure base for children to explore and successfully understand the social world around them (Feeney & Noller, 1996). However, this depends on whether or not safety, a secure base, and an organized view of relationships are formed between the caregiver and child during the first 18 months of the child’s life. Moreover, if a child experiences maltreatment such as abuse and neglect from primary caregivers during their first 18 months of life, it can severely affect what type of attachment style is formed and how development occurs in early adulthood (Connell-Corrick, 2011). Therefore, to thoroughly understand how childhood maltreatment affects attachment and development, an overview of both attachment theory and childhood maltreatment, the effects of childhood maltreatment on both attachment and development, and the importance of protective factors, interventions, and preventions will be discussed.

The Lord of the Rings films are an immensely popular early 2000s film trilogy. Yet the films’ popularity goes deeper than critical acclaim. The films have a cult following, enough for the films to have frequent theatrical re-releases and for Hollywood to begin producing more Lord of the Rings content starting in 2022 with Amazon’s Rings of Power. Why do these films, the first live-actions adaptations of Tolkien’s books, have such long-lasting appeal? Academic scholars have thoroughly attempted to answer this question. Some scholars have even utilized the theories of Carl Jung—including his theory of archetypes—to explain the purpose of certain characters within the films. Few, however, have utilized Jung’s theory of archetypes in great depth alongside his theory of the collective unconscious. This piece attempts to supplement the works of previous scholars in explaining the Lord of the Rings films’ appeal by emphasizing subconscious appeal, utilizing the theories of Carl Jung. Specifically, this piece analyzes the characters of Gollum as a portrayal of the shadow archetype, and the characters of Aragorn and Arwen as the anima and animus archetypes respectively. Further, this piece argues that Jung’s theory of the collective unconscious in humans not only be applied to the portrayal of the race of men in the films, but also to the races of elves and orcs. Elves and orcs are shown to have similar but different collective unconsciouses which viewers can then subconsciously compare to the collective unconscious of men portrayed. This analysis serves to explain a number of subconscious appeals of the Lord of the Rings films which explain their immense and long-lasting popularity.

Stress is common, and potentially adverse, for individuals transitioning to college. The purpose of the present study was to describe and understand first year college students’ experiences of stress. Specifically, the goals of this study were twofold: (1) to describe the types of stressors experienced by students transitioning into college and (2) to understand the predictors of students’ experiences of the different forms of stressors. Ecological Momentary Assessments were collected over the course of the first semester of the participants’ (N = 194, 56% female) first semester of college. Stressors were coded into 8 categories: academic, global interpersonal (family, peer, other interpersonal), obligational, health, and finances. It was found that (aim 1) academic stressors were endorsed the most frequently, followed by global interpersonal stressors and obligational stressors. Results also showed that (aim 2) males reported more frequent academic stressors than females, and females reported more frequent interpersonal stressors than males. In addition, higher GPA was positively related to obligational stressors and family support was positively correlated with academic stress. These findings suggest a need for increased awareness of stressors that students within differing contexts experience in a university setting.

Director Wes Anderson enlisted the talents of composer Mark Mothersbaugh for his first four films (1996-2004), but suddenly decided to turn to composer Alexandre Desplat for the following five films (2009-2021). The question arises as to why this would be the case. In this paper I explore the career backgrounds of Mothersbaugh and Desplat including their musical influences and styles. I then examine Mothersbaugh’s music for The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and Desplat’s score for The French Dispatch. I analyze the use of music in these films and how it relates to the characters, their feelings, and their thoughts as well as how the music is intertwined with Anderson’s unique direction style. Part of this investigation will highlight the musical styles used, the mixture between composed and borrowed music, and the function of the music in the film to discover the similarities and differences between the two composers. With this paper I hope to fill a gap in the literature on film studies focused on the work of Anderson.

In September 2022, production company Netflix released their limited series Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, a series that focuses on the life and crimes of infamous serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. Shortly thereafter the series would become one of the most successful series in Netflix history. However, this popularity did not come without extensive criticism from viewers, critics, and family members of Dahmer’s victims. This project seeks to evaluate the mass appeal of Netflix’s Dahmer through the theoretical framework of Carl Jung’s collective unconscious and the shadow archetype. Scholars have previously tried to explain the appeal of true crime as a genre without reaching a consensus. This project analyzes the existing explanations for the appeal of true crime along with why these explanations are unsatisfactory when seeking to explain the appeal of Dahmer, followed with an analysis of how the shadow engages with Netflix’s Dahmer through the ability to become secondarily conscious through Dahmer and the projection of one’s shadow qualities onto Dahmer.

Endometriosis has created a public health crisis in the United States due to its high prevalence, and its severe health ramifications. Not only does endometriosis have a wide-ranging prevalence in the population, as it is predicted that 1 in 10 females of reproductive age suffer from this disease, but endometriosis significantly decreases this population's quality of life, productivity, and emotional well-being due to chronic pain and infertility issues. There have been several identified reasons behind the endometriosis diagnosis delay, including patient and provider-centered causes, which lead to the dismissal, stigmatization, and tolerance of symptoms. However, there is limited research about the social determinants influencing the United State's diagnosis delay. This study aimed to investigate the social determinants surrounding the endometriosis diagnosis delay by interviewing Endometriosis patients about their own diagnoses. Participants were also asked about their satisfaction about their endometriosis diagnosis. A thematic analysis was conducted using patient testimonials to reveal trends surrounding the endometriosis diagnosis delay. On average, 40 participants reported experiencing a diagnostic delay of 11.75 ± 7.94 years. Participants report significant dissatisfaction with the timeliness of the endometriosis diagnosis, the providers' ability to be communicative and receptive, and the providers' ability to diagnose endometriosis. Many social determinants were also associated with diagnosis delays - including gender, ethnic, racial, economic, geographical location, age, and sexual orientation factors. Not only do participant testimonials reveal the need for culturally competent care, validation, and patient-centered care during the endometriosis diagnosis process, but these testimonials also emphasize the need for diagnostic surgery and specialized care as endometriosis is a complex disease that can have systemic implications on a patient. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AGOG) endometriosis care guidelines should be adjusted to reflect the needs of endometriosis patients.
