The current research extensively explores approaches for the treatment of Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (NOWS), yielding evidence of both complementary and contradictory methods. The purpose of this paper is to review and consolidate the current literature into comprehensive recommendations for treatment interventions and patient assessment. An optimal approach involves the interlacement of non-pharmacological care, pharmacological therapy, and the proper evaluation of progress. Though these topics differ greatly in implementation regimens and a facility’s ability to comply, each aspect of care can heavily impact recovery, and all must be discussed. Following the literary discussion, a new assessment instrument and multiple streamlined recommendations for the aforementioned topics will be introduced. The proposed instrument synthesizes information from 18 scoring methods to find a balance between neonatal comfort and clinical efficacy. It is the hope of this research that there will be improvements in individualized NOWS care based on the findings in regards to both comfort control and holistic, representative symptom observation.

OBJECTIVE: In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the health and wellbeing offamilies and communities alike. The purpose of this qualitative research study was to better understand the perspectives and experiences of Arizona mothers who gave birth and transitioned to parenthood during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: This research study was a qualitative thematic analysis. Arizona residents aged 18 and older who gave birth after March 2020 and spoke English proficiently were eligible to participate in this research study. Participants completed a 90-minute virtual interview, answering questions about their overall perinatal experiences during the pandemic. Interviews were recorded, transcribed and reviewed for accuracy. A codebook of themes was created. The transcriptions were analyzed and coded using Delve software. RESULTS: In total, 18 interviews were coded for this study when saturation was reached. The average participant age was 31.78 ± 5.52 years and was predominantly White (89%). In total, 61% reported experiencing birth-related trauma and approximately 60% of participants were able to take parental leave, while 40% did not. Four principal themes emerged from data describing the transition to parenthood during the COVID-19 pandemic: 1) Maternal Experiences During COVID, 2) Navigating the Support System, 3) Perinatal Healthcare Insufficiencies, and 4) Retrospective Insights. Of these four primary themes, fourteen associated subthemes were also identified. CONCLUSION: The transition to parenthood is a multidimensional ecosystem centered around maternal and infant wellbeing with family, friends, community, and healthcare providers serving as primary influences. Inadequate healthcare, broken social networks, and diminished health promotion skills that bridge families to the care and support to thrive in parenthood have been reduced during the pandemic as women in this study exhibited poor mental health, faded self-efficacy, and reduced access to care.

Background: The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infant andChildren (WIC) provides participants with a supplemental food package that follows the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA’s). The WIC food package has been shown to improve the diet quality and overall health status of WIC participants. Since the 2009 WIC food package revision, standard issuance of 1% or fat-free milk has been practiced for participants 24 months or older. Improving the value that participants have on the WIC foods can be an effective method to improve redemption of WIC foods and improve overall participation. The aim of this study was to examine if allowing issuance of 2% milk when clients refuse issuance of 1% or skim milk would affect benefit redemption of milk and other WIC foods. The study also examined how providing clarification through training on policy change for issuance of 2% milk would improve staff and director knowledge of this change in policy. Methods: This study was an observational, longitudinal study that used linear regression analysis of aggregated data at the local agency-level from the Arizona WIC program. Redemption data were analyzed using the Arizona WIC Health and Nutrition Delivery System (HANDS) at three different intervals throughout the study. The three months prior to the policy introduction (March-May 2020), redemption after policy introduction (July-September 2020), and redemption after policy clarification with 2% milk policy trainings (December 2020-February 2021). Redemption was measured as benefits issued versus benefits redeemed. Two separate surveys were delivered (via Qualtrics) to the 18 local agency directors (n=18) and their staff members (n=287). These surveys were used for descriptive purposes. Results: The results of this study found that there was a decrease in redemption of 2% milk and all foods at the post intervention stage of the study. WIC staff were found to have a better understanding of policy to issue 2% milk. Conclusion: Although these findings are consistent with other current research, further research is needed to examine how changing policy on current food restrictions placed on WIC foods affects redemption and how this may improve overall participation.

This creative project aims to explore how interactive bonding and imaginative play can be used as a potential coping mechanism for both children with chronic illness as well as their families. Research has shown that parents of children with chronic illness have higher psychological and emotional stress. They face the obstacles of long hospital stays, financial burdens, and fear of losing their loved one. Parents can also place blame on themselves for their child’s illness and wonder what they could have done to prevent the situation. Most parents dream of having a healthy, happy baby, so when their child has an unexpected illness, it can be emotionally overwhelming, and make it harder to connect with the child. It can also strain a relationship between a husband and wife. In addition, it was found that parent stress could hinder a child's ability to cope with their illness, affect their confidence, as well as their social and emotional development. Therapeutic play has been commonly used in pediatric hospital settings. Therapeutic play allows one to express their feelings, it provides a creative space for engagement that serves as a distraction from the medical world, and it enhances development. The hope of this study is to find a way to use creative play and “artmaking” to create a safe, fun, and open space for the child and caregivers to connect and identify their emotions. The study is ongoing, so this paper will provide the process of the research.

A two-group randomized control trial (RCT) is conducted among 156 individuals (control group n = 79, intervention group n= 77). Inclusion criteria were English-speaking young adults aged 18-26 who have not been vaccinated against HPV. Participants who met the inclusion criteria based on an online screening form were recruited via Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) and invited to join the study. They first completed a pretest (T0) online via REDCap, randomly assigned to the intervention or control group, and completed a posttest (T1) after viewing their assigned intervention. Participants assigned to the intervention group watched two brief animated videos while participants assigned to the control group examined an HPV educational brochure created by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior, survey questions measured HPV-related knowledge, attitudes, perceived severity, perceived susceptibility, vaccination intent (T0 and T1), sociodemographic characteristics, and health history (T0 only) of participants. The results showed the intervention group had an increase in vaccination intent while the control group had a decrease in vaccination intent. This shows that video education methods are more effective than traditional written education methods at increasing vaccination intention among young adults.

In this manuscript, the topic of breastfeeding is explored as it relates to a mother's economic and education level. More specifically, family income, employment status, marital status, and level of education are observed in order to identify any trends or patterns that may influence a mother to prefer breastfeeding over formula feeding. The data presented comes from a research study that utilized three prediction scales which aim to understand a mother's attitude towards infant feeding, self efficacy or confidence, and the chance of discontinuing breastfeeding prematurely. The purpose of this project is to call attention to disparities that may exist from a lack of education and resources for mothers to choose the form of infant feeding that is most beneficial to them.

Background: During the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, nurses experienced increased workloads which affected their compassion fatigue (CF). High levels of CF affect quality of care. However, little is known about what factors are associated with CF among nurses during the pandemic. Aim: This study aims to examine the factors associated with CF using the socio-ecological model (SEM). Methods: This study is a cross-sectional correlational study which targeted nurses who are actively practicing and can speak English, Korean, Japanese, or French. Online websites for the recruitment including the study description and survey link were provided in each country. Survey data were collected from July 1, 2020 to January 25, 2021. CF, consisting of burnout and secondary traumatic stress (STS), was measured using Professional Quality of Life scale (ProQOL). Factors based on each level of the SEM were measured: intrapersonal factors (demographic factors, resilience), fear of infection, intention to leave their job, care of COVID-19 patients, developing policies, being asked to work at higher acuity levels, received training about COVID-19, and any COVID-19 test results); interpersonal factors (fear of bringing COVID-19 to family); organizational factors (provision of personal protective equipment [PPE] or masks, organizational support to prevent COVID-19, type of organization, and accommodational support); community factors (country of practice and incidence rate); and policy factor (mask policy). These data were analyzed using multiple regression using maximum likelihood estimation with robust standard errors. Results: Intrapersonal factors (resilience, age, being bedside staff, fear of infection, intention to leave their job, being asked to work at higher acuity levels, and receiving the positive COVID-19 results), organizational factors (provision of PPE, organizational support for COVID-19, and accommodational support), community factors (incidence rate when the mask policy was not in effect, and country of practice), and policy factor (mask policy under a high incidence rate) were the associated factors. The interaction between incidence rate and mask policy was significant. Conclusion: To prepare for future emerging infectious disease crises, organizational support with proper PPE supplies, continuing education on emerging infectious diseases, and providing interventions to increase resilience are suggested.
