The current research extensively explores approaches for the treatment of Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (NOWS), yielding evidence of both complementary and contradictory methods. The purpose of this paper is to review and consolidate the current literature into comprehensive recommendations for treatment interventions and patient assessment. An optimal approach involves the interlacement of non-pharmacological care, pharmacological therapy, and the proper evaluation of progress. Though these topics differ greatly in implementation regimens and a facility’s ability to comply, each aspect of care can heavily impact recovery, and all must be discussed. Following the literary discussion, a new assessment instrument and multiple streamlined recommendations for the aforementioned topics will be introduced. The proposed instrument synthesizes information from 18 scoring methods to find a balance between neonatal comfort and clinical efficacy. It is the hope of this research that there will be improvements in individualized NOWS care based on the findings in regards to both comfort control and holistic, representative symptom observation.

"[It] Wasn't Just All in My Head:" Living with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS)

Description

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a chronic health condition in which there is a lack of blood flow to the heart. This can cause dizziness, fatigue, and an increased heart rate (US Department of Health and Human Services, 2017).

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a chronic health condition in which there is a lack of blood flow to the heart. This can cause dizziness, fatigue, and an increased heart rate (US Department of Health and Human Services, 2017). These symptoms are only a few of many that may present in patients with POTS, and each patient’s symptoms present with varying intensity. Additionally, there is no set criteria for diagnosing POTS (Olshansky, et al., 2020). Because of this, it is extremely difficult to diagnose patients with POTS and the process can take years. Patients with POTS often seek insight and care from multiple providers which often leads to confusion or no answers. Many times, patients with POTS are diagnosed via a series of procedures that must be done as they face a lifetime with the disease. The lived experiences of patients with POTS are not widely known. It is thus essential to explore this gap in the literature in order to better understand how this disease affects all aspects of a person’s life and inform future research into POTS and develop solutions. This study aims to answer the following research questions: What is the experience of someone with POTS from the onset of symptoms to diagnosis and treatment? What are the attitudes of people going through being diagnosed with POTS?

Bacteriophages are the most numerous type of organisms in the world. These viruses have the ability to destroy bacteria that they specifically match. Phage therapy shows great promise to become a solution to bacterial infections and antibiotic resistance. To ensure that younger generations are aware of this field of research, we created a website to educate them. The website contains lessons and a game that will encourage confidence, curiosity, and understanding of bacteriophages.

Poetry therapy is an arts-based therapy that has the potential to be applied to any population if the facilitator is motivated to work closely and compassionately with people of various backgrounds. Therapeutic poetry workshops were conducted with adults with disabilities and previously incarcerated men over the course of several months. Each workshop was analyzed for successes and areas for improvement, and adaptations were made between consecutive workshops. After the completion of all the workshops, recommendations were provided for working with each population and for applying poetry therapy successfully. Finally, the application of poetry therapy to healthcare, specifically nursing, was addressed as a way to use the knowledge gained from this project to lessen the emotional burden of being a patient and being a healthcare provider.

Heart Rate Variability is a measurement of the autonomic response to stimulation or the body's ability to adapt to changes in stimuli. Heart rate variability is a representation of stress reaction of the body, and so a higher heart rate variability is a higher overall state of health and higher resilience. Furthermore, with increased availability of devices, heart rate variability can be utilized to track and measure health, wellness and fitness. Therefore, there is great potential for application of heart rate variability to track levels of performance and adaptation to stress and training loads. Heart rate variability can be a very useful for individuals to have a greater understanding of overall resilience.

This scoping review provides a synthesis of research which explores the literature on the topic of barriers, facilitators, and potential solutions to breastfeeding among minorities. The purpose of this review was to identify existing literature in regards to breastfeeding among minorities, describe possible solutions to reduce theses barriers, and identify implications for future research. The findings add to the existing research on breastfeeding among minorities, including LGBTQAI+ members, by triangulating literature to identify the expected and unexpected challenges of breastfeeding.
