By studying the workflow used to create the black hole, Gargantua, in Interstellar, artists can understand how to simulate complex astronomical phenomena in other special effects software such as Houdini. This workflow utilizes a balance between scientific realism and artistic interpretation of astronomical phenomena such that simulations can maximize their success in film. Through significant amounts of research and study, the artists at Double Negative generated a scientifically realistic black hole in shape and physical behavior, but made creative decisions when shading and lighting their simulation. I find that DNeg’s workflow integrates well when using Houdini technology. I follow their workflow to generate a series of spiral galaxies in Houdini and find how Houdini’s node network layout allows artists to incorporate both scientific realism and creative approaches to a simulation. A strong understanding of the mechanics of the simulated astronomical event scientifically informs the look and shape of a production, while Houdini’s node network layout makes it easy for special effects artists to manipulate simulations to their own artistic interpretation of astronomical phenomena.

3D printing prosthetics for amputees is an innovative opportunity to provide a lower cost and customized alternative to current technologies. Companies, such as E-NABLE and YouBionic are developing myoelectric prosthetics, electrically powered terminal devices activated by electromyography (EMG), for transradial amputees. Prosthetics that are 3D printed are less expensive for juvenile use, more sustainable, and more accessible for those without insurance. Although they are typically not outfitted with the same complex grip patterns or durability of a traditional myoelectric prosthetic, they offer a sufficient durability (withstanding up to 150 N on average) and allow for new opportunities in prosthetic development. Devils Prosthetics, a student research and development group associated with Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS), has investigated the benefits and pitfalls of utilizing polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG) for 3D printing prosthetics as well as combining a MyoWare EMG sensor with machine learning for optimal control of the prosthetic.

Every week, students will engage in collaborative activities and learn a variety of topics related to friendship, including the benefits of friendship, barriers to friendship, and friendship maintenance mechanisms. As part of their final project, students will demonstrate their knowledge of making and maintaining healthy friendships by completing a case study in which students will be expected to apply their learnings from class to a chosen friendship and observe how the friendship changes as a result. In order to establish the need for the course I made, I first conducted a literature review on friendship, loneliness, and factors that may contribute to young adults having difficulties making friends.

The Mack model and the Bootstrap Over-Dispersed Poisson model have long been the primary modeling tools used by actuaries and insurers to forecast losses. With the emergence of faster computational technology, new and novel methods to calculate and simulate data are more applicable than ever before. This paper explores the use of various Bayesian Monte Carlo Markov Chain models recommended by Glenn Meyers and compares the results to the simulated data from the Mack model and the Bootstrap Over-Dispersed Poisson model. Although the Mack model and the Bootstrap Over-Dispersed Poisson model are accurate to a certain degree, newer models could be developed that may yield better results. However, a general concern is that no singular model is able to reflect underlying information that only an individual who has intimate knowledge of the data would know. Thus, the purpose of this paper is not to distinguish one model that works for all applicable data, but to propose various models that have pros and cons and suggest ways that they can be improved upon.

Fuzzing is currently a thriving research area in the cybersecurity field. This work begins by introducing code that brings partial replayability capabilities to AFL++ in an attempt to solve the challenge of the highly random nature of fuzzing that comes from the large amount of random mutations on input seeds. The code addresses two of the three sources of nondeterminism described in this work. Furthermore, this work introduces Fuzzing Debugger (FDB), a highly configurable framework to facilitate the debugging of fuzzing by interfacing with GDB. Three debugging modes are described which attempt to tackle two use cases of FDB: (1) pinpointing nondeterminism in fuzz runs, therefore paving the way for replayable fuzz runs and (2) systematically finding preferable stopping points seed analysis.
