Description
Sounds of Stewardship is an hour-long presentation designed to be presented by an advanced solo violinist to classes of fourth and fifth grade students. The program uses music and storytelling to encourage collaboration, creativity, and empathy to promote stewardship of the natural world. Throughout the presentation, students vote on different options for how a story should progress, and their decisions determine which musical excerpts are performed by the violinist. Students also participate in deep listening exercises and soundscape creation activities in support of the story. By making decisions that affect the unfolding of a new piece of music, the goal is for students to feel an increased sense of their own agency and creative capacity. This document is a guide for how to present Sounds of Stewardship using the script, score, and slideshow presentation. A walkthrough for a hypothetical performance of this presentation is included. Additionally, my process for creating the seventy-six score excerpts is described, in the event that a non-violinist instrumentalist wishes to modify or create a new score appropriate to their instrument for their presentation of a similar program.
