Description
In the United States, the most common type of cancer is skin cancer. The most common forms of skin cancer are: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. There are numerous organizations that have created awareness campaigns to inform the public about the risks of skin cancer and the methods that they can use to protect themselves. The organizations analyzed in this paper were: Melanoma Education Foundation, Melanoma Research Foundation, AIM at Melanoma Foundation, Melanoma Research Alliance, The Skin Cancer Foundation, and The American Cancer Society. After an analysis of the organizations’ skin cancer prevention methods, three themes were developed. These themes consist of: “Self Awareness”, “Nothing is Perfect”, and “Language of Prevention Techniques”. The articles informed the public that they needed to make a conscious effort to protect their skin, and even with the proper protection methods it is still possible to be diagnosed with skin cancer.
The goal of informing the public about the risks of skin cancer was achieved, and it was done in a specific manner.
