Dr. Matthew Scotch’s research centers on genomic epidemiology and bioinformatics of RNA viruses, with a primary focus on influenza A, including both seasonal and avian viruses. His team employs molecular approaches for metagenomics and amplicon-based high-throughput sequencing to analyze virus samples from the environment (e.g., wastewater and dog parks), patients, and animals to detect viral threats, as part of an NSF Predictive Intelligence for Pandemic Prevention (PIPP) Phase II Center. Using bioinformatics and phylodynamics, he identifies the diversity, evolution, and spread of these viruses. This research enhances understanding of viral transmission dynamics and develops innovative methodologies for early detection and response to infectious diseases.
